LABOUR IN AFRICA.
"MURDEROUS CONDITIONS."
TOM, MANN'S VIOLENCE.
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright, JOHANNESBURG, April 11.
A meeting of eight thousand Labourites in Market Square passed a resolution to resist any attempted repressive legislation. Mr Tom Mann signed a circular on behalf of the Transvaal Federation of Trade Unions urging the workers to remember the deaths of their comrades who were shot by the Government's orders in defence of capitalists, and remember the deportations that were made without trial.
The circular declares that railwaymen are working for the starvation wages of 4/-, and many for only 3/4 a day, equal to 1/6 a day in Europe. Gold mining is carried on under murderous conditions. The average life of the white miner is five years. Only one-fourth of the white workers in South Africa are organised. This must be altered. The unions must cooperate and prepare for solidarity.
