Combeve, left Marseilles January 24. SHIPPING NOTES. Well up to time, the ferry steamer Maori arrived in port yesterday morning. She brought 162 saloon and 155 steerage passengers. The Maori leaves for the north again this evening. - ~ i a The first steamer to load at New Zealand ports for Hull—the Rakaia—has arrived m Lyttelton from Wellington. It is expected 'she will leave port for Hull about April 16. Mr P. Moody, chief engineer of the Maunganui, who has been on holiday leave, rejoined his vessel on Thursday. Mr P. Norman, late of the Moeraki, has joined the Maunganui as assistant purser. Mr G. P. Anderson has signed on the Moeraki as assistant purser. Mr A. Mac Donald, third engineer of the Navua, left that vessel on Thursday. Captain Williams, master of the Auckland Harbour Board's pilot launch Waitemata, has resigned that position as from the end of April. Captain A. J. Lockie has been appointed to succeed him. Satisfactory repairs having boen effected to the Scales chartered steamer Clan Macdonald, and the vessel having filled up with cargo, she took her departure from Wellington for Dunkirk; and other Continental ports on Friday morning. The steamer Kaikoura, which left Wellington last Thursday /or London, is due there on May 21.

To-day -the C. and. D. liner Star of Victoria leaves Wellington for Wanganui- in continuation of her Homeward loading operations.

A bottle has been picked up at Saide Point, Queensland, containing the following message:—"Thrown overboard November 27| 1909, in latitude 43 degrees S„ longitude 95 degrees W., or 300 miles off the west coast of South America, in direct line with Australia, 6000 miles." The message, which was in eight languages, was from the Japanese training ship Taisen Maru. The finder was asked to reply to the Japanese Nautical Society, Tokio.

Cable advice lias been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company stating that the steamer Otaki arrived at London last Thursday. The vessel left Wellington for Home on February 22. To-morrow the steamer Suffolk, now- loading under the auspices of the New; Zealand Shipping Company; is fixed to leave' Wellington for London. '
