THE AUTUMN COSTUME.
It is always a serious business to the woman whose dress allowance is a small one when she comes to consider the a-utumn* coat and skirt question. In spite of the fact that blue always holds its own in the world oi fashion, it seems that the v navy coat and skirt will this season have a vogue sueli -as it has never enjpyed before. To be strictly up-to-date, however, it must be allied to either plaid or striped materials of silk. As nothing returns such solid wear as this sensible style of garment, few women will care to raise an argument on the score of its embellishments.
Best of all—perhaps .from the point of view of becomingness—is the alliance of tartan and navy serge. This could foe easily achieved by having a simply-made blouse of tartan silk, and drawing the shirt collar and sleeve cuffs over the coat, whilst the buttonholes on the costume could also be piped with tartan. If relieved with a black satin tie the whole would represent a smart suit, with nothing extravagant or ultra to mar the effect.
