LATE COMMERCIAL.

MINING.

THE TALISMAN MINE.

Pru* Associatitn. WELLINGTON,; March 20. The local board of the Talisman Company, Messrs Jackson, Weston, and Dr C. Prendergast Knight, has issued the following statement: —"The drop in the market price of Talisman shares is probably due to a report made by Dr Henderson, now: being issued by the Government Mines Department, upon (inter alia) the Karangahake field. The attention of Mr Stansfield had been drawn by the board to the report, and his reply, in a letter received this morning, is as follows;—rl.should not be inclined to take it too seriously. We all know that mines become exhausted or unprofitable finally, • but the Talisman has not reached that stage yet, afiTd neither' Dr Henderson nor anyone else can prove* tliat it is near or otherwise. No. 12 winze is still all right; and I hope to get No. 9 going next week if men are available. This is the opinion of the mine manager, who, more than anyone , else, is acquainted with the' idiosyncrasies of the mine and district. In considering reports of scientific ex-, perts, investors should always remember that the older and more experienced the man, the less he is inclined to indulge in prophecy." "

, (SThe Sun Special.) March 21. , There waS a revival in Talismans, this morning, and the indications are that the price shares will revert to normal. The sudden drop yesterday caused considerable consternation, but the reassuring nature of the manager 's, report, published this morning, had the effect of checking the Slump. By the noon call yesterday Talismans had dropped from 41/6 to 36/-. .An-urgent request for a report from the manager was responsible for his stateDr Henderson 'b report could not have. been accepted as a.true state-, ment of the position of affairs. At the a.m. call to-day, shares changed hands at 38/6 and 39/-, and at the 11 a.m. call sales were made at 39/- and 39/3! "
