RESCUE WORK.

A largely attended meeting of tlic Diocese Society of . the Church of land lleseue Work was held yesterday at Mrs Humphreys' residence, Bealey Avenue, Mrs Julius occupying the chair. Mrs Seddon referred to the work carried on in Christchurch some year:; ago by Sisters Frances and Maridn, and Mrs Cunnijagton. Before Canon Burton left for Engl&ud a sum of money was given into his charge, with a request that it might be devoted to similai work, and to enable him to find trailed workers in the Old Country. Having received the Bishop's approval * anc sanction, Canon Burton accepted the charge. It was understood that the work should include the diocese generally, and should be conducted strictly upon church principles, persons of any and of every, denomination being eligible, the work itself being in accordance with the faith and teaching of the church. It was desired that the proposed work should embrace a central home, with maternity and training divisions and laundry, a shelter and a nursery. The example of St. Mary's Homes at Otaliuhu, near Auckland, was much commended. Besides the £2OO, sums of £25, £lO, £2 2s, and £1 had been promised before the meeting opened, and £4O more was promised in the room, and assurances given from others that they will communicate later. In the absence of Canon Burton, Mrs Sandstein was appointed to preside at the meetings. The secretary is Mrs Humphreys, and the treasurer is Miss Cocks, it is desired that . full provision for the whole work may be in readiness when the selected workers arrive in the Dominion in a few months' time, and the officers will be glad to hear from any who feel interested in the matter.
