LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Last night the bi-monthly "meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council was held. There were present the Mayor (Mr J. B. Webb), Crs J. Guthrie, N. C. J. T. Norton, M. J. Miller, W. Radcliffe, G'..'B. Rich, J. H. Collins, F. J. Page, and W. T. Foster. A report from the Waterworks Committee stated that,-owing to the. extraordinary consumption of water at the end of last week, the borough engineer had made an examination of the mains in the railway yard at midnight on Saturday, March 7. Two defects were discovered, and repairs were affected on Sunday. The borough engineer, Mr H. Barnard, was granted four weeks' leave of absence as from yesterday. This will enable Mr Barnard to attend the annual Conference of Local Government Engineers at Auckland.
Every endeavour made by the Estates Committee to induce the Railway Department to revert to the erstwhile system of charging direct to them, instead of to their tenants, was unsuccessful. The council is now taking a legal opinion upon its position in respect to its tenants, under the new regulations; and in the meantime is not prepared to accept any responsibility for the charges now imposed upon the tenants by the Railway Department. The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, wrote that he would endeavour to visit the Zig-zag, on the road from Lyttelton to Sumner, during his next visit to Lyttelton. A letter from Mr W. Knott asking about a retaining wall for Sault's Gully, and a request for a football grouad from the Lyttelton Rugby Football Club were both referred to the Works Committee.
