CRICKET.

SENIOR GRADE.

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

The final match for the senior championship of the Canterbury Cricket Association, between the Sydenham and Eicearton teams, was started at Lancaster Park this afternoon. At the start of play the wicket was a trifle soft, but was drying under a bright sun.

Both teams were below full strength for the dav, Whitta (Eicearton), Patrick, Bennett and Wilson (Sydenham) being in Dunedin, playing for New Zealand against the Australians. Winning the toss, Eicearton batted 'itst, opening with E. R. Caygili and A. Norman, who faced the bowling of Watson and Hayes. Play, started just on 2.10 p.m. Euns came slowly for a while, at a rate of less than one-a minute. With the total at 48, Watson bowled Caygill with a good ball, which came in a lot from the off> Norman was batting well, and he and Fuller took the score to 77, when H. M'Clelland bowled Fuller with a ball that came in from leg. Four runs later Norman was dismissed, caught at cover by Ayling, off W. Hayes. Bain and Taylor batted brightly for a few minutes, and then, at 113, there was a treble change in the batting, Taylor being caught by Ayling off Hayes, Bain playing a ball from Watson on to his stumps, and A. H. Guiney being bowled by Watson. Harper and C. A. Caygill checked the procession by very careful batting. The play was dull, and the small gathering of enthusiasts paid more attention to a distant speck in the sky, which represented aviator Scotland's biplane. Presently Eicearton's stock fell another degree. Trying to pull a ball from Paterson, Harper missed it, and the ball shot off his pads into the stumps.' Seven wickets for 129. S. J. Smith joined Caygill, but soon saw the latter beaten by an off-break of excellent length from Watson, and eight wickets were down for 133. Eight more ru/s on, and then Boulton was caught at silly point by Hayes, off Watson.' As Eicearton were batting a man short, to keep a place for Whitta, this ended the innings.. Scores:— Sydenham's innings was opened by Hayes and Conradi. Hayes was soon batting brightly, but with the score at 28 Conradi was beaten by Boulton, with a ball that came in from the off. Hayes was batting well, but Woods, who joined him after Conradi's dismissal, wa£ slow in starting. Bain was bowling pronounced off-theory, and much of his stuff was allowed to go. by. Presently A. H. Guiney relieved' Bain, and in his second over he got Hayes lbw, Hayes coming across to a ball.which came in from the off. 56-2-35. ..

J. -Tayoiy the next man in,, started his scoring account, with a couple of very nice strokes, and he and Woods soon made the "score climb. Presently S. J. Smith relieved Boulton in the attack, but the batsmen scored steadily. More changes in. the ' bowling proved ineffectual, and when stumps were drawn for the day Sydenham's score was 113 for two wickets. A. Norman c E. Ayling b W. Hayes ~.. . . . .... 41 E.' R.
