g. , I would quote this, chapter which is headed "A Night- j %S mare," in full. But no, on second thoughts, I would t,' , do nothing of the kind, for it is positively too painful, f< too dreadful to be read away from its context. The |S Incident, so the author informs us, is based upon a v 0" scene witnessed by him in the physiological class of j|/. ' Edinburgh University in 1882. With this exception, 1.. this chapter in which a note of tragedy is struck so %• powejfully, so unsparingly, light comedy pervades the I- .pages of Mr Townsend's book, -and -those who have >; readi"Dr Tuppy" need no reminder from me as to the | ' author's ability as a mirth-provoker. : - "A Thoroughbred Mongrel" does credit alike to the author's heart St and pen. No one who loves dogs should miss this excel 1 W lent story. Mr J. A. Shepherd contributes a number of |- well-drawn illustrations. The present is the eighth §;<Y edition of the story. and "The Winds of God," by Hamilton Drummond. Miss Bamsey give's us a highly exciting, somewhat melodramatic story of the adventures, in the Chinese quarters of the East End of London, of a young journalist who is told off to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young lady typist. The author piles sensation upon sensation, but the dramatic element in the story, which is developed in a vigorous, attractive style, is agreeably varied by a very pretty love story. Mr Drummond takes us away to the South Seas, whither journey a stoiit-hearted Scotchwoman, "Captain Joan," and he.r yeoman lover, in search of ldng-hidden treasure, the secret of which is disclosed by her father's will. There is a fine romantic quality about the story, which here and there is quite in the Stevensonian spirit.
