INCREASE THE FORCE.
Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 23. The Minister of Justice states that he requires a hundred additional constables for service in various parts of the country to meet the growing demands of settlement. Eeplying this afternoon to a deputation asking for additional police protection in a part of the city, the Hon. A. L. Herdman referred to the difficulties under which the short-staffed police force at present carried out their duties. He was constantly receiving complaints from rapidly-growing districts, such as Ohakune, where there was only one constable, that more police were required. He intended to ask the Minister of Finance for the necessary funds to increase the force by 100 men.
