Press Association. ' (Received February 24, 10.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, February' 24. , Arrived —Moeraki (7.30 a.m.), from' Wellington. LLOYD'S REGISTER. IMPORTANT APPOINTMENTS.' Last week the appointment was announced of Professor Westcott S. Abeil to the position of chief sureyor' at Lloyd's, and that of Mr Charles BuchaDan as his senior assistant. How well fitted these gentlemen are for the posts selected for them is shown in a sketch, of the carrer of each published below:— Professor Abell, who was born in 1877, has had a distinguished career. His professional education commenced in the Royaj Naval Engineering College, Devonport, and was continued at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. In 1900 he was appointed to the Royal Naval Corps of Naval Constructors. From i 904 to 1907 he was professional secretary to the Director of Naval Construction, and for the next three years held the position of instructor in uaval architecture at th* Roval Naval College. In 1910 he was selected to fill the chair of Naval Architecture at Liverpool Unive»sity. The professional reputation which he has won for himself at a comparatively early age is illustrated by the fact that he was appointed last year by the Board of Trade to be member of the' Loda-line ■ Committee, which is now sittinir to consider the existing freeboard tables. Mr Chas. Buchanan, for whom the offici of principal of the chief ship surveyor's staff has been created, is one of the bestknown and most popular naval architects of the <la.y. He has been associated with mercantile shipbuilding throughout his career. Prior to joining the service of Lloyd's Register, in 1880, he held the position of chief draftsman with the well-known firm of Messrs A. M'Millan and Sons. Later he enjoyed a varied experience of his profession at various shipbuilding ports in the United Kingdom. Since 18S1 lie has been stationed in London, holding for the last seven years the position of assistant to the Chief Ship Surveyor. For many years past it has been hvs 1 duty to deal with plans of vessels""snlmiitteft for tlio committee's approval, and this work has given him a probably unique knowledge of all the latest developments of shipbuilding practice throughout the world.
