For some considerable time complaints re pillaged cargo have been few and far between as far as Lyttelton is concerned. Recently, however, several have been received by one company, and a diligent watch is beiiig kept to detect the offenders. Auckland and Wellington are reputed to be the worst ports for claims for pillaged cargo. Owing to so many being unable to attend the waterside workers'-meeting convened for -yesterday, it was postponed till an " opportune time. The monthly meeting of the Lyttelton Wharf 'is to be held on Thursday, February 26, at 8 p.m. As the grass-seeding work on the peninsular finishes the Waterside workers who make an annual trip there, return and expect to find ready employment on the wharves. One would imagine by recent reports that things at Lytteitom'were bad and that a strike was imminent. ■ To show that the likelihood of a strike is far from the watersider's minds was made clear yesterday when both original members of the Union and exstrikers discussed in a'friendly manner the question of holding an annual picnic. A flying hat was beautifully fielded this morning by a High School boy who was walking along Worcester Street towards the A cyclist was pegging along with his head down to the ungentle nor'-wester. His hat was snatched from his head by the wind and whirled into the air. It was coming down, to the ground with a beautiful curve when it was fielded splendidly by the High School boy. It was a lefthanded catch which would have made the boy's reputation on the cricket field. The fire brigade received two calls last night of little importance. The first was from a house in Caledonian Road, St. Albans, where a rubbish fire had.got out of hand. No sooner had the'brigade returned from answering that call than another was received from 10 Clothier Street, where a macrocarpa fence and a cabbage tree were blazing merrily in front of a house, and .causing some anxiety. The hand pump was requisitioned, and the flames extinguished before much damage was done. At the waterside workers' meeting held this morning at Lyttelton, Mr H. R. Voyee spoke at considerable length about the abilities of several of the new members. He personally had had an unenviable time whilst working in a gang of five that included four original members of the new union. The new mer. were quite inexperienced at the class of work they were engaged in, and Mr Voyce states he had to do the lion's share, and yet receive the same remuneration. Another remark was to the effect that from the employers ' point of view, preference was against their own interest, and the sooner it was removed and men chosen on their respective merits, the "sooner a better working condition would result.
