SEAMAN DROWNED.
FATALITY AT LYTTELTON. Shortly after nine this morning another fatal accident occurred at Lyttelton, being the second within a week. On this occasion two of the crew of the steamer Delphic, were engaged in painting the side near the wharf. They were both standing on a staging, when one of them named J. J. Gilead, an A.8., 27 years of ago, overbalanced and fell betwen the wharf and steamer. In falling he struck his head, and though the bosun and the man who was working on the platform with deceased immediately went to his assistance, the only trace of Gilead was the liat he was wearing. Dragging was at once commenced, and the body was recovered at 10.30 a.m. The deceased was a native of England, and has a mother residing at Bow, London. He had been away from home for three years, and joined the Delphic at Newcastle about five months ago, with the intention of making the trip to London; There seems to be an uncertainty as to whether Gilead in falling struck a boom moored alongside the Delphic, for from the height of his fall he would have been badly marked, while, when the body was recovered, there were none. An-inquest will be held, probably this afternoon.
