SOME OP THE DBESSES. The weather god was extremely kind on Saturday to the ladies who had made up their minds to go to the races, for a more genial day could not have been imagined. It seemed specially designed to show off pretty-peeking, and the scene* on the, lawn and grandstand was a bright and animated one. As was natural at a "between seasons" meeting (for all that it is called mid-summer), the gowns worn were of different types, some being distinctly summery, and others in much heavier ni&kes. Tailored costumes, as usual, had a good following, and many of them were worn with the smart little black velvet hats that strike such "a chic and effective note in present-day dressing. ; Not very many country folk were present in c,ompsrtion, to, the crowds, who come in, for the big meetings. Lady Clifford chose a purple cloth costume, and her closefitting straw hat was trimmed with a purple Lancer plume. Mrs Bernard Wood wore pearl-grey cloth, and smart black velvet hat. Mrs Quane, always an exceptionally smart dresser, wore a stylish tailored suit of navy serge, the coat showing the new sash effect carried out in tprquoise silk, black hat with deep amethyst plume. Miss Quane also appeared in navy blue. Mrs Stringer wore saxe-blue pailette, small hat'in tones of saxe-blue and black; her black satin race-coat was effectively ornamented with gold lace. Mrs A. E. G. Ehodes wore a smart black gown and black hat. Mrs Harvey Paterson, beautiful gown 6f Irish crochet, effectively touched with black,nattier blue hat< Mrs Kohn was in gray with black and white hat. Mrs Grantley Norton chose a fawn-coloured costume and a black hat, Mrs G. Donald wore a 'stylish confection of black satin and 1 cream crepe-de-chine, the skirt being of satin and the bodice and tunicj of crepe-de-chine. With it she wore a black hat trimmed with plumes.. Mrs Lester Matson looked very well in a 'black tailored cloth costume, and black hat in the new sailor shape, Mrs Westenra, fawn-coloured face cloth costume, small' hat of saxe-blue velvet, Mrs D. Allen, striking gown carried out in dark blue satin "and gold brocade, black hat. . Mrs Turnbull, lemon-col-oured silk crepe, hat to harmonise, Mrs Boyle, mole-coloured corded silk, black hat.
