BOMBS HIDDEN ON LUSITANIA.
, STORY OF CONBRTR ATORS. '£1,000,000 DAMAGE! TO ATLANTIC SHTPS. NEW YORK, Oct. 11. > Three men were arrested yesterday evening on oharges of conspiring to blow up ships m New York Harbor m 1916. The police assert that these men art responsible for the destruction by bombs or fire of £1,000,000 worth of ships and cargoes. It is also stated that the chief conspirators wero Dr. Karl Schimmel, who escaped to Buenos Ayres arid thence to Rotterdam ; Captain Franz Rintelen, who has already beep convicted of conspiracy; Otto Wotpert, superintendent at the Atlas Line pier, who has-been admitted to bail ; Captain Sternberg, Rintelen's chief assistant; Walter Scneele, chemist; and three men, now m prison, whc were arrested before the Lusi'tania sailed on -her last voyage. One of the arrested men boasted that he- had placed nine "cigars," meaning bombs, on board. One; of the prisoners states that bombs were placed on board the Lusitawia before she started on her fatal trip. The accused men are charged with placing bombs on, and setting fire to, 35 Allied amd neutral ships since 1915. Several of the vessels were burned at sea.
