*»' | There was a frost on the night of Friday last sufficiently severe tiv cut down pumpkins and maize. This is said to be the latest date on which frost has been recorded m this neighborhood m any year. Some of the crops of oats liave suffered somewhat from the rain wliich fell last night and are rather badly laid m consequence, but the rain was very much needed 1 to bring along the feed. The ground has. never been really wet sine© the dry spell of last summer. A hive of bees have made their headquarters at the County Council Chambers during the last year, and to-day are busy swaxming. The swarm is a very large and apparently healthy one. Mr A. M. Lewis and Mr Cyril Lewis left on Sunday for Auckland. It is said that Mr Lewis intends introducing a new make of car into the district, and ; t will probably return overlaid with his new purchase. Increasing interest is being taken m the Chess Club and a "ladder" is to be started slxortly. The meeting night is to be Monday m future instead of Thursday. If sufficient support is forthcoming it is proposed to hold a chopping contest at the garden fete.
