THE ELECTIONS.

♦ LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES. MR J. R. KIRK MAYOR OF GISBQUNE. The> polling booths were rushed towards closing time last night, the interest m the municipal elections appearing to increase as the day wore on. The polling was fairly satisfactory', about 2600 electors ouit of 4300 on "the roll exercising^ their franchise. The weather was threatening all day, and m the evening mm set m. Despite the muddy state of the road) and the disagreeable weather, a large crowd assembled m front' of the Herald office when the returns were being posted. Some hundreds of people remained m the streets until after midnight, and it "was past 1 o'clock before the returns were complete and the final figures posted. ... The polling was conducted by Mr H. 2*4. Porter, Borough Returning Officer, as usual, and considering the large number of votes that- had to be counted m respect of the various issues the work vrtw done with the utmost expedition. Although it was not anticipated the results 'would be available much before 9. o'clock, Mr Hennessy, who had charge of, the "Vyhataupoko booth, was able to announce his figures m the Mayoralty contest, within about half an hour of tine poll closing. This was followed quickly by the West End booth, where Mr M. Craig had the distinction of being tlie first booth to, finish up all their returns. The work at the other booths was equally, satisfactory, and with the multiplicity of candidates the returning officer and his .staff had a strenous night's work. Mr W. Howard was entrusted with the . writing up of the returns on the special hoarding at the Herald office, and the same was carried out m his usual capable manner. The results of the elections were as follows: —

It will be noted that Messrs Smith, 'Collans, Brown, Waldish, \Vad« and Hepburn, members of the old Council, were re-elected, the new i Councillors Messrs H. Bright, H. E. Hill, and \V.
