THE PALMERSTON NORTH TRAGEDY.
PALMERSTON N. May 11.
Wm. Knowles, on remand, was charged: at the S.M. Court to-day with the murder of his wife, Martha Adele Ann Knowles, on April 28. The witnesses for the prosecution stated that they had seen the accused chasing- his wife along the path, that he he caught her, and during the struggling that followed two puffs of smoke were seen, followed by reports. The deceased fell into the water channel, and accused returned to the houße occupied by his wife. In a few minutes he returned to deceased, juxd remarked to those gathered : "1 am going to haye a last kiss ;< !-• suppose it ' will be, the last. I expect I shall be 6trung for it." Ha knelt and kissed her, and as he rose was eeoured by the bystanders. A revolver was taken from his coat pocket. As'iti was taken tiie accused ..remarked V '-Itls no good. If it had been of any use I would be dead now." He voluntarily handed over the cartridges left, and was then arrested by the police. Knowles was committed for trial at th« June sittings of the Suareme Court.
