Endowed School, Caerleon, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, England.

Bear Mary, — Seeing to are so far apart I thought I would write this letter, hoping it •will be of interest to you. I live in an ancient village called Caerleon. This place was, during the time of the Romans, a. great " city." The Romans held their sports and amueemen'ts here in C?erleon. The name Caerleon derives its name from Caer (meaning a camp) aiid Leon (a legion), meaning altogether the " camp of the legion. " We have several ruins in Caerleon, among which may be mentioned the Roman Arch, which was supposed to b» the burial place of a " Saxon king." The chief industry of the people around the country . where- I live is agriculture and ..farming. A great addition to Caerleon is the asykim which has lately been built. Situated three miles to the north-west of the village is- a large port — namely, Newport. The chief export of Newport is coal. Our school is divided into tbree rooms. "We have four teachers and the governess, whose name is Miss Stott;. Yesterday we had our bi-monthly examination. Our school was endowed by a lich gentleman called Charles Williams. £100 is divided between the boys and girls for scholarships. In <#rder to gain this scholarship we have to attend regularly and pass H.M. inspector's examination. The first 10 girls on the list are elected for the sum of £5 each. During the winter tim« we have such fun, and I am sure our teachers are as bad as we are in preparing the slides. What subject do you like best in your school ? I must tell you that on Friday afternoons we are allowed to have two miscellaneous lesson", iv which we generally take general intelligence, the lesson in which we are highly delighted, so much that we fairly shout out in eagerness to answer. Have you some euolyptus in the place where you live? 1 should like very much for you to send me a few leaves of the tree. Have you ever read Tennyson's Idylls. No doubt your teacher has read them. If so she will know about Caerleon, as it is mentioned several times in it. Do you collect post cards? I do. I should like you to send me one next time. Next time I w'l' send you a postcard of Caerleon, the place I live in. In my next letter I will tell you more- about my school and work. I will close now. — With kind regards your Englieh friend, Gladys Chilcott-
