GREYMOUTH, May 10. The Lake Brunner Oil Company is now carying out what the late Mr Cooper had decided on — namely, the putting down of a, large bore of Bin in diameter, to be reduced to 6in as the depth increased, and to bore to a depth of 2000 ft or more, unless satisfactory results should happen earlier. •The progress just now is unfortunately ilow. due to passing through a kind of 'quicksand, which 'works at times up the .pipes to the height of 50 or 60 feet, giving tn immense amount of extra work. This -is doubtless caused by gas or .other pers- _ sure from, below, Mr Smith has managed to, get .through some 60ffcof this bed, and ■is using his best energies and skill in "coping with, this difficult ground. He will make good progress when he gets through this and into harder country, which may happen any day. Work, however, was resumed last November, and it is intended to push "on the work as speedily as poslible, let us hope to a successful issue.
