CANTERBURY DOINGS

By Fbitz.

April 14. Hankins, tho Wingatui trainer, was among the visitors to the South Canterbury meeting. During the meeting he disposed of Fulmen to a Temuka sportsman, who will, it is understood, use the son of Castor foi stud purposes. One of the few proved stayers at present on the turf, lie should prove a success as a sire, if he jnly gets a decent chance. Telemeter, the winner of the Flying Handicap at Timaru, made hi last public appearance at the corresponding meeting two years ago, when he ran unplaced in the High-weight Handicap, won by Bristol. Some well-bred horses figured in the hack races at Timaru, among the sires represented being Phaethon, Palliser, St. Ives, and Kulnine. Prior to Ordnance's successes at the Timaru meeting, Roden had not secured a win with on-e of his own horses since Rangefinder won at Ohoka in October, 1898. Mi F. Le Cren, who died at Timaru on Wednesday night, was one of the founders of the South Canterbury Jockey Club. Tho flags at the course were all at half mast on Thursday as a mark of respect. The South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, hold on Wednesday and Thursday, passed off very quietly. The weather was anything but promising early in the week. Heavy rain fell on Tuesday, but it cleared off on Wednesday morning. The course was very heavy, particularly at th« back, and as it was bitterly cold all day there was not much pleasure for the visitors. Thursday, however, broke beautifully fine, and there was a larger attendance. Speculation was fairly brisk. The total isutor receipts on the first day showed ft slight decrease as compared with last year, but on the second day there was an advance of £316, so that the money handled for the meeting showed an increase >f £226 over last year's figures. The club licensed the bookmakers for the meeting, and there was a strong muster of cash fielders, who appeared to attract a considerable share of business. The racing, taken on the whole, was rather uninteresting, nearly all the races ending in oasy victories. The opening event, the Maiden Plate, fell to Ordnance, a daughter of Sen of a Gun and Melusina. Though she has shown a fail amount of pace in some of hei previous ventures, she hod never done anything to support the belief that she could stay out seven furlongs, and she was neglected in the betting. She was in front the whole way, the only one to get near her at the finish being Clanburn, who, after starting slowly, put in a great run over the last two furlongs. In the Dash Handicap, nothing had a chance with Rawmore. He jumped smartly off the mark, and soon had a big break on the field. He tired at the finish, but still won very comfortably. Terrapin -was aiways in a handy position in the Autumn Handicap, and when lie made his run in the straight- he quickly settled the chances of the others. Lady Lillian, was the favourite, but she cut a most inglorious figure, being hopelessly beaten all the way. She is only a little one, and her weight and the heavy going eeemed to effectually anchor her. Kotokoto ran surprisingly well. He made the pace after the first furlong, and finished second. Heaits had jio difficulty in appropriating tne Hock Race, the field for which included a rather good-looking colt- by Phnethon, in Trentham, who is not yet ready, but who should do better later on. Cianburn was brought out for a second time in the Welter Handicap. He lay in a handy position for the greater part of the race, and once in the straight soon placed the issue beyond doubt. Magnificent made a poor showing, being last all the way. Lwpidary was opposed by a poor lot in the Selling Race, and had no difficulty in appropriating the race. The last race on the first day the Flvin" Handicap, brought out five starters, of'which Rosemere and Antigone were most in demand. Telemeter, the outsider of the party, who has had a lengthy spell, hopped off in front, and won all the way from Lady Medallist, who wa? finishing very strongly. Pioceedings opened on the second day with the CounjY Pate. St.«Ehn-v, a half-sister to Picket, by St. George, who had run.well 'or a few furlongs in the Autumn Handicap the first day, was sent out favourite, but £he made no show, the winner turning up in Ordnance, who was again allowed to retiirii her taken a substantial dividend. The Electric Handicap wrs a funny race. There were- only two starters, and following his usual- tactics, the rider of Rawmore rushed his mount to tne fiont, with the result that at the end of two furlongs he was leading PaJlaa by hah a dozen lengths. In the straight, however, he tired budlv. and Pallas caught him a furlong from home, winning with ridiculous ease. Rawmore is remarkably speedy, but la only Buited by a very short race. The Jockey Club Handicap gave Mr V. Harris his first win with. Culibre. The Light Artillery colt has plenty of race, but his recent running would indicate that he does not always care to try, and the result ia that he has been a great disappointment to his owner and trainer. On Thursday, however, he was caught in a galloping mood, the result beirg thnt he won rather easily at the fiuish. Terrapin shaped disappointing y, ai.d Kotokoto, after being knocked about at the ptart, tailed off all the way. Lady Lillian gave a. better display than on the first day, and «fter linking most *of the pace, finished third. Hearts, Ihe first day's winner, being absent horn tbe Hack Raca. the way was paved for Don Bell, who scored very comfortably. The Stewards' Stakes provided Clanburn with an opportunity to show a little more of his form. Ciilotype made most of the running, but Clanburc "put iv his claim in the straight, and had everything aettled in a few strides, winning with ridiculous ease. Magnificent shaped very badly, and finished a long way in the rear. Though giving away lumps of weight, Lapidary easily downed the moderate lot that opposed him in the Novel Race. .He was disposed of to Mr P. Butler, acting on behalf of a friend. Of the 11 entered foi the Farewell Handicap, four faced the starter. Lady Lillian, who was a decided favourite, took command early in ihe race, and never left the issue in doubt. Palkis mr.de a fair sho»-, but "had no chance with the Ash burton mare. A feature of the Timaru meeting was the runr.ing of Clanranald's stock, which appropriated three races, besides finishing second in another. The other winners were sired by Ahua (2), Son of a Gun (1), Phaethon (2), Kulnine, Gorton, Chain Armour, Light Artillery, and Artillery.
