UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the University Council was held at the Education Office Buildingo on Monday afternoon, and attended by his Honor Mr Justice Williams, Dr Burns, Professor Shand, Mr J. Allen, M.H.R., Mr D. White, and the .Rev. A. Cameron.

FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT.

The Finance Committee roet in the morning and passed a schedule of accounts for payment to the amount of £750 18s 7d. The bank book showed a debit balance of £702 12s. Requisitions for materials for next year's work in the following laboratories were examined and recommended for sanction : — School of Mines, £52 ; practical pathology, £4 ; chemistry department, £65 ; and physics laboratory, £14.

It was decided to hold a speoial meeting of the Finance Committee on Tuesday, the 10th, at 2 p.m., to consider the balance sheet and the general state of the University finances.

The committee also suggested that the amount paid by the University as water rates was excessive, and that as the University is a national institution the City Council be asked to remit the charge made for water rates against the University and the Museum, £41 and £10 respectively.— The report was adopted.

The Rev. A. Cameron gave notice of motions as follows: — (1) "That the council appoint Dr Watt as lecturer upon Hebrew without remuneration " ; (2) " That the council recommend the Senate of the New Zealand University Ho amend the statute for the B.A. degree, co »s to allow students to take Latin or Greek as a, subject for that degree " ; (3) " That the Dean of the Medical School be asked to give effect to the paragraph on page 10 in the report on the Medical School, headed ' Course of Study and Examination'"; (4) "That 0 committee, consisting of Professors Sale and Shand and Mr Allen, M.H.R., be appointed to prepare a memorial for the Senate of the New Zealand University, to ask them to give effect to the six proposals on page 11 of the medical reuort."

A report was received from the chairman of the Professorial Board, recommendingthat^ the Maeandrew scholarship be awarded to Cyril Palmer Brown and the Stuart prize to Arthur W. Standage. Also that diplomas in mining metallurgy and assaying be issued to T. O. Bishop, and m metallurgy to G. A. Gow and W. G. Roy?e. Further, that a copy of Seherer's " History of German Literature " be purchased for the University library.— The recommendations were approved of.

Mr H. Clark wrote, resigning his seat upon the council. — The registrar was instructed to inform the Minister of Education, and to write to Mr Olark regretting his resignation from the council. The Secretary of the Students' Association wrote re the cutting-down of an oak tree at the end of tie tennis court.— The matter was referred to the House Committee. Mr Kinder wrote ro the Richardson scholarship, applying for further extension.— The council regretted their inability to accede to his request, the concession already given meeting the case. It was decided to hold the next meetingof the council on the lTth of December, to consider the report of the Committee on the Arts Faculty and the Mining School, the committee not being prepared to report at Monday's meeting.
