THE CHARLTON CREEK WATER RIGHTS.

(FHOII OUB OwiJ CORRESPONDENT.)

GOUE, November 26

A meeting of farmers and representatives of dredging companies was held in the G ore Athenseum lasi night for the purpose of discussing the proposal submitted by the Minister of Mines in regard to a settlement of tEe Charlton water difficulty. About 25 gentlemen attended, the number including a majority of the landowners directly interested, besides a large representation from the companies. Mr M'Nab, M.H.R., was -present by invitation. Mr Thoa. ■Q-reen occupied the chair.

Mr M'Nab gave a lengthy explanation of the position of the creek and of the Government proposals. After his arrival from Wellington He wired the Minister of Mines re the question, and received the following reply: — " R. M'Nab, M.H.R., Gore, — Re Charlton and Waimumu Creek. We propose to contribute one-third the cost of a channel, and in addition it is estimated that £100 would supply cleai water for ihe Charlton Creek settlers, Anderson, Campbell, and Keir. If one settle* objects, we will have the powei to resume his land, which would put that settler in a worse position. I hope you will be able to place the matter before those interested in such a ligh> that they will bo able to go on with the work. — James M'Got7a:t "

A long discussion ensued regarding the proposal of the Government to provide one-third of the cost of the channel. The consensus o> opinion was that if the department intended to provide clean water for farmers, in; addition to contributing one-third of the cost o± the channel, the offer was a very reasonable one. The department's estimate for providing water was £100, but it was agreed that this sum was totally insufficient. It was admitted that farmers should not be called upon to pay, and if the channel cost from £600 to £700, two-thirds for the mining companies was not excessive. All the farmers present accepted the terms proffered — viz., that the channel should be constructed to take away storm water, and that they should bo provided with clean water for their stock, provided, however, that the work is done to their satisfaction. A motion to obtain the adherence of the different companies was carried", and the meeting adjourned for three week 3 for that purpose.
