THE CHEVIOT EARTHQUAKES.

WELLINGTON, December 2. The Government telegram from Cheviot states that since Friday sharp and cannonading and dull booming sounds have preceded and followed the earthquakes. At 2 a.m. to-day a sharp noise in the air "preceded a series of light shakes. At 3.59 a ■very viol&nt shock from the north was followed by a dull sound in the earth.
