HAWKE'S BAY.
A strike on the Gisborne-Karaka railway line occurred on Thursday. A gang of 15 iner>, wlio>-© wages for the month averaged 7s 5d per working day on a co-operative contract, refused to accept the sum. They say that for like work in other places, and with shorter hours, the pay is higher. They complain that they have to remain idle while the engine is being used for other purposes. At the first meeting of the Hawke's Bay Woollen Factoiy Company on Friday a board of directors was elected frtr the ensuing year. It was announced that 56 girls had already been engaged, that good progicss was being made with the building of the factory, and that work would be .started in February next".
At a meeting of the Hatuma settlers the Hon.' W. C. Smith stated that the Government had consented to revalue the settlement, which was now valued at £50,000 higher than' when it was owned by Mr Purvis Russell.
