AUCKLAND.

Some months ago the Board of Education was informed by the Kaihiku School Committee that Me J. B. Murray, head master, had failed to comply with the wishes of the committee that he should instruct children in saluting the flag. After some correspondence the board informed Mr" Murray that he must either teach the children to salute the- flag or resign. The committee alleged th"at the head master's unpatriotic conduct had caused ill-feeling in the district. Mr Murray denied that his conduct was unpatriotic, md staled that he could not personally salute any flag as he would a human being : it was against his conscience. Tlie matter was considered by the board .on the 27th, when the chairman moved that Mr Murray be given ihrea months' nofcee of dismissal. The motion was carried by five votes to two. At a meeting of the Grammar School Board Dr Dakin, 8.A., B.Sc, now of the Napier High School, was appointed teacher of modern language-., at a salary of £225 per annum.
