In the oaily Indiana days, when both judges and attorneys liiera'ly " rode the circuit," a newiy-eleciod judge, noted for his lock Jf personal beauty, wps plodding along on horseback between two country seats one summer clay.
Suddenly he wa« confronted by a litmtcr, who wishing his squirrel }ifle from hi* shoulder, and ordered the horseman to dismount. Soiacwhat startled by this peremptory command, the juris?!; began to remonstrate. He was quickly cut short, however, ,-by t'io rpmark :—"lt's: — "It's no use talking. I long ago swore that it I ever met a homelier man than I am, I'd shoot him on sight."
The judge, sizing up the situation, promptly got off his horse. Folding his arms, he faced hib assailant, and said: — "If I am any homelier than you are, for heaven's sake do shoot, and be quick about it." Neediest to say his wit saved him.
