TABLE TALK.

Monday Afternoon

A very large number of people- flocked out to the A. and P. Society's annual show on Friday afternoon at Tahuna Park. Never before has such a huge concourse witnessed a show of the bind in Dunedin, there being over 16,000 people present. The superb weather was doubtless a. huge attraction, the afternoon being really perfection. The sun was shining brightly and clearly ; yet there wa3 o fresh crispness in the air that made everyone and everything look bright aud pretty. There was plenty of music, too, during the afternoon, thp Citizens' Band, the Pipers', and the Industrial School Band all being placed in different corners of the grounds, discoursing sweet mu«ic. A great number of ladies were clad in summer gowns, flowered muslins and stamped delaines, trimmed in almost every cr^ with tucks and lace, seeming to be the favoured materials, but white spotted muslins and cambrics were also freely worn, and in almost every case seemed to suit the wearer charmingly. The terrace was a sight in itself, the bright di esses and many-coloured sunshades making a perfect blaze of colour.

At 2 o'clock the vice-regal party, consisting of the Governor, the Countess of Ranfurly, Lady Constance and Lady Eileen Knox, and Captain Alexander and the Hon. C. H. Butler. A.D.C.'s, drove out, and were welcomed by Mr JBrydone and Mr Douglas. Aftgr going round inspecting the various points of interest, the vice-regal party were ensconced in the judge's box, which was decorated with flags and furnished with chaiif, whilst during the jumping and the woodchopping competition they canie down on to the lawn, and watched the different competitors with gre^i interest. Lady Ranfurly wore a coat and skirt of turquoise bluo frieze, the former made short, with rounded basque fronts, and with revers and sailor collar of white satin, covered with ecru "lace, outlined with two or three row« of black velvet ribbon, vest of white tucked s>:lk and chiffon, large black hat of chiffon i rimmed with feathers, and she carried a white parasol ; Lady Constance Knox, bright rose pink cloth skirt and coat, the latter opening to show a white satin vest ; white feather boa, and large picture hat of black crinoline straw, the brim covered with rolls of black chiffon, ami turned up in the front with a cluster of- black, feathers, white ploves, and a.ro£'3-pink silk parasol; Lady Eileen Knox wore a little blue serge coat and skirt, and large Leghorn straw hat.

A large number of carriages were in tho grounds; amongst those in vehicles being the Misses M'Lean, Mrs Logan, Mrs James Logan, the Misses Logan, Mrs Stephenson, Mrs Hazlett (Invercargill). Mrs Edmond, Miss Menlove (Oamaru), Mrs A. S. Paterson and parry, Mr and Mrs T. Brown. Mrs Fergus. Mr? Maclean, Mrs Macdonald (Edendale), Mrs 'Myers, Mis? L. Logan and Miss Mackellar, Mrs' A. F. Fenwick, Mrs Cutten, Miss Gray. Mrs and Miss Jamieson, Mrs Sise, Mrs C. Reid (Clifton), and Miss Sise, Mr and Mrs Sinclair • Thomson and family, Mr Carr, and Miss Blakney and Mrs Laxnach.

Thjirsday aud Saturday, the two days on which races were held at Wingatui, were both unfortunate as regards weather, being bleak, wet, and cold. On the first day very few ladies found their way out to the racecbuise, and the stand and lawn looked quite fteserted, while even the sterner sex seemed to be present in very limited numbers, the cold, unfavourable breeze and frequent showers doubtless frightening even them from going as far abroad as Wingatui. Lady Ranfurly had intended to be present, but owing to the weather she was forced to" relinquish her plans, but his Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Alexander and the Hon H. Butler, arrived before the first race, and atayed out all day -at the. raoecourse, watching the different events with keen interest. On Saturday, the 30th inst., things looked a little more promising in the morning, and frequently the sun shone out quite brightly between the showers/ but the latter were never far apart, and woe to anyone who had ventured out without a large macintosh and umbrella. About 12 o'clock it looked a« if It might clear up and be a fine afternoon ; consequently a fair number of folk went out by the 11.45 train, Lord and Lady Ranfurly and Lady Constance Knox and suite being amongst the number. A part oi the stand was cut off with flags and drapes for the vice-regal party, and furnished with chairs. The North-East Valley Band was in attendance, and the selections they played helped to some extent to cheer the hapless spectators, who, for the greater part of the afternoon, had perforce to sit in the grand stand instead of sporting themselves on the grass lawn, the bright frocks and parasols which we expect to see at the summer meeting being quite absent. On both days the stewards of the Jockey Club gave a luncheon for Lord and Lady Ranfurly and suite and a few favoured guests. The luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements were all excellent, and between the showers a stream of ladies could be seen wending their way to the huge marquee, where refreshing hot tea was served all the afternoon.

Lady Ranfurly wore a skirt and short coat ol rose coloured frieze cloth, the latter faced back with white satin covered with cream guipure, and "white satin vest, large picture hat of black chiffon ; Lady Constance Knox, purple cloth costume, with white tucked satin and guipure vest, and large picture hat. Amongst those present also were Mrs Percy Harris, who wore a smart black cloth skirt and coat, the latter faced .with stitched white silk revers, long pink rhifton ruffle, and black picture hat ; Mrs Arthur i'isher, bright corujlower blue gowu*

furs, and hat en suite ; Miss Blakney, long fawn box cloth driving coat, strapped and stitched, and fastened with large pearl buttons, black chiffon hat; Mrs Stephenson (whom all were glad to sec once more), handsome black silk gown and mantle, and Marie Stuart crape bonnet; Mrs W. Coughtrey, dark purple cloth costume made with a ve%t of silk of a lighter shade, and pretty black hat ; the Misses Neill both wore stylish gowns of a pale fawn colour, made with deep belts and collars of floral silk of the same tone, and large poke-bonnet-shaped hats trimmed with chiffon and vos.es ; Mrs Carew, a very stylish gown of tucked black chiffon, the bodice trimmed with bands of crenm insertion and gold braid, large black and white picture hat; Mrs E. On Tuesday, Mr and Mrs George M'Lean gave a large dinner at "Hazck'eiii," their reader cc in Eldei street. in hen >ur ot hu Excellency the (10-ionn: :;nd Lady llanfurly, who. along with ihcir suite, were present. r lhe flowers and general arrangements wore sll perfection, and everything passed off most successfully. Amongst those present besides the host and lioste-s and Lord and Lady Ranfurly wore AHsc M'Lean, Captain Alexander, "Hon. C. H. Butler, Mr and Mrs Peicv Xcill. Mr B. Neill, Mr -md Mrs Batchelor, Mr Holds-worth, and Mrs Thomas. On Friday evening Mr and Mrs Michie gave a delightful dinner at their residence in Hiffh street, m honour of Dr and Mrs Batchelor.

It i^ a ""c«jj tirre since any kind of Government Hou'e entertainment has been given in Duiiedin — not since Lord and Lady Onslow weie here, and high junketings were held at Onslow House, whither many of ou» townsfolk were invited to dkiner, dance, or tea. It is regrettable that Lord and Lady Ranfurly have been so unfortunate in the weather they have experienced oince they came to Duiiedin — a few weeks ago — to re°ide in Mr John Roberts* s well-known Littlebourne House. Doubtles3 they have come to think that it always rains here, and were consequently not so disappointed at the frequent shower 3of rain on Monday as the invited guests, whe know Dunedni can furnish a most perfect day. when tho ;lerk of the weather permits. The Governor and Lady Raufurly had invited nearly 600 persons to be present at a garden party on Monday, the 2nd inst.. but all morning the weather was very bad, and the afternoon was still showery, so not more than 300 people were present. Notwithstanding ths inclemency of the weather, a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent at Littleboume House. Everything that could be thought of had been done to make the function a success, and the guests wore all looked after in the most thoughtful manner possible. The "At home" was given in honour of Queen Alexandra's Birthday, which fell on Sunday this year, and a date of which we have not yet become familiar in keeping as a festival. The Garrison Band, which had been engaged for the afternoon, was stationed on the lawn under the flying Union Jack, and discoursed good music, which made things seem bright and cheerful,*. albeit the paths in the grounds were rather damp for promenading, save by the very venturesome. But the verandah and broad gravelled drive were much used, and made a pleasant change from the house, and saved any overcrowding in ihe spacious rooms within.

Litfclebourne House is so well known to Duncdinites, from the many entertainments given by the kind owners, that it is needless to describe it, beyond saying that on Monday, as on former occasions, it proved how excellent a house it is for entertainments of all kinds. Lord and Lady Rnnfurly, Lady Constance Knox. and Lady Eileen Knox, stood in the hall, at the foot of the staircase, and receivpd their numerous guests there in the most gracious mansiei possible. The visitors then parsed into the drawing room, from which an entrance can be gained to both thp grounds and the morning room, so overcrowding was quite, avoided. At 4 o'clock tea v,a= served in the large dining room, where the table looked loiely and most tempt iug, for besides cakes and sandwiches of all kinds, strawberries and fruits were served with cream. Here, too, there was no overcrowding, and the numerous attendants looked after the guests with great promptitude. After receiving Lord and Lady Ranfurly and their .laughters moved amongst their guests, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly, and regretted when 5 o'clock came and time to say good-bye ; whrai Lord and Lady Ranfurly again graciously shook hands with all their guests.
