DUNBACK.
May 29. — A concert and dance in aid of the funds o£ the Dvmback Cricket Club v.-as held in Glover's Hall on Friday, 19th inst. The attendance was very fail. Mr John Mills acted in the capacity of chairman. A lengthy programme was carried out, many oi the performers being recalled, notably Mr Brown for his recitations. Songs were contributed by Mrs Whetter, Misses Johnston (Milton), Johnston (Dunback), Rendall (Inch Valley), and Me?sr3 A. Cockerill, F. Connelly, and Cumberbeach. Mr T. Brown, of Palmerston, contributed two recitations, for which he was heartily encored Mr E. H. Clark danced a sailor's hornpipe in his usual acceptable manner. Miss O'Neill played a pianoforte solo, and a duet in conjunction with Miss Gilmore. The accompaniments were played during the evening by Misses O'Neill and M'Lew, and Mr Battersby. A farce entitled, " Wanted : A Cook," in which the parts were taken by Messrs T. Brown and E. H. Clark (both of Palmerston), brought the performance to a close. A dance was held afterwards, and was carried on for about four hours. A liberal supply of refreshments was provided by the club.
Life in India. — Mr G. M. Thomson, o* the Dunedin Boys' High School delivered a lecture in the schoolhouse oir -the 22nd in aid of the funds of the local libraiy. The subject was
" Life in India," and illustrations were given by the aid of limelight, the lantern, the property of Mr A. Lawson (Palmerston), being manipulated by Mr Mills. The attendance was only moderate. The lecturer dealt with the phases of Hindoo life, and took the audience in imagination for a trip up the Ganges, and described the many interesting places and buildings to be seen. A number of views were shown of Hi idoo temples, idols, and sacred cattlo. The lecture all through was instructive and entertaining. Mr Ritchie moved a vote of thanks to Mr Thomson for his address.
Wedding. — Another wedding has been an interesting topic with ladies, the contracting parties being Mr T. Ross eldest son of Mr W. Ross, Shag Valley station, and Miss Margaret Murray, only daughter of Mr Walter Mutray. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Panton Brown* at the residence of the bride' t> parents. Mr D. Mxirray, jun, acted as groomsman and Misses B. and E. Ross were the bridesmaids. The wedding breakfast was served in a large maiquee. The bride was the recipient of a large number of valuable and useful preFents. The bridegroom was presented by his late fellow employees on the Shag Valley station witl> a handsome gold albert, and by the manager, Mr Ormsby, with a gold watch key.
