THE OTAGO SCHOOL OF MINES.
A conversazione was held in the School of ! Mines on Friday night, with the object of i raising funds for the purpose of establishing a : library in connection with the school. The affair was got up by the students, and proved very enjoyable. Most of the rooms j in the building were thrown open to visitors, I a large number of whom were present, and ' the greater part of the evening was spent in I wandering from room to room inspecting ' the various objects of interest on view, and hearing- explanations in regard to them. In • one room assaj'ing in all its branches was being carried on by the students, and great j interest appeared to be manifested in the proceedings. In another room Dr De I Lautour gave an exhibition with the i Rontgen rays; while in a third room Mr ! Le Lievre entertained the visitors by showing them numerous interesting electrical apparatus. A fourth room was devoted to amusements. Here Mr J. Webb exhibited a number of limelight views of mining localities in the Queenstown district, as well as a few viewß of lake scenery. Mr Goodlet also subsequently helped the audience to while away a pleasant half-hour by showing them a number of chemical experiments, in which he was assisted by a " coloured gentleman, ' called Pete. " The Black Diamond --.lmstrel Troupe," which was composed of a number of students of the Mining School, ■ likewise created a considerable amount of amu sement by their performance, which included the singing of a number of very ancient negro melodies, such as "Uncle
Ned," "Fanny Fail," etc. During the course of the evening the visitors were also regaled with light refreshments.
