DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S MAY

MEETING. Second Day. — Thursday, May 25.

The -weather was again very unfavourable on Thursday, when the second day's- racing took place, and the attendance was not nearly so large as on the previous day, but still there were a fair number of visitors to the course. Messrs Ma.°on and Roberts put £3091 10s through the totalisator during the day, the total amount handled by them during the meeting being £7965 10s, or £934more than they handled at the last May meeting. Abercrombie got away with the lead, while Red Banner, Vandyke, and Refugee hung at the post. When the bottom of the course was reached, however, the field were pretty well bunched. Abercrombie led into the straight, followed by Peerage and Red Banner. After passing the distance post Red Banner passed Peerage, but was beaten rather easily by a length by Abercrombie, there being the same distance between second and third. Nihilist was fourth, Vandyke fifth, and Refugee last. Time, lmin 42sec. Dividends, £3 lls and £1 18s.

At the top turn St. Hiko took command, and Waikaia went into second place. Glenore and Pioneer came down at the hurdle just beyond the six-furlong post. When the bottom of the course was reached a procession was formed by St. Hiko, Windermere, Waikaia, and Nat, who ran in that order. The relative positions of these remained unchanged till near the finish, when Windermere shot in front and won by a length, there being some three or four lengths between second and third, while Nat was several lengths away fourth. Time, 3min 25sec. Dividends, £3 9s and £2 10s.

The starter was applauded for his perfect work. Five of the seven staiters went in line to the turn out of the straight, the two that got squeezed out being Glenelg and Double Event. Clinker got a slight lead after going a furlong and a-half, and entering the back stretch he was just clear of Jupiter, with Maremma in third place. Along the back Clinker was out by himselfj Jupiter and Maremma fighting for second place When between the fifth and fourth furlong posts Maremma went past Jupiter, and disposed of Clinker, but a furlong further on Jupiter came again with a sturdy challenge, and he and Maremma went clean away from the rest of the field, -nhile Malatua was lying third as they turned into the straight. Jupiter had Maremma in trouble at the distance, and though the latter struggled on well he had no hope. He had at last to give up about three or four strides from the post, leaving Jupiter to win by three lengths. Malatua was a moderate third; then came Clinker, Skirmisher. Glenelg, and Double Event in the order named. Time, 2min 26sec. Dividends, £4 14s and £2 Bs.

NOVEL HANDICAP, Of 50sovs ; the winner to be sold with his engagements, and the whole of the proceeds of the sale of the horse to go to the club funds. 591* Edelweiss soon went to the head of affairs, and at the home turn she was followed by Quickshot 11, Tiger Lily, Nihilist, and Vanilla in that order. When well down the straight Tiger Lily took premier position, but was soon displaced by Vanilla, who beat her, after a good race home, by half a length, while Gitanella, who passed those in front of her in tho straight, finished just behind Tiger Lily. Edelweiss finished fourth and Nihilist fifth. Time, lmin lOsec. Dividends, £2 18s and £1 lls.

When about a couple of furlongs had been covered Hypnotist and Britannia wers almost srde by side in. front, Clinker and Benzoin being a couple of lengths in their rear, while Glenelg was last. The same order was preserved to the home turn, when the field closed up. Hypnotist led into the straight, and wos followed by Britannia, Clinker, and Glenelg in that order. When about halfway down the straight Glenelg took command, and won by about half a length, there being aboxit a- couple of lengths between Hypnotist and Clinker, who passed Britannia in the straight.
