TAIERI AND WAIPORI BITERS.
A meeting of chairmen cf the local bodies intere.'«d in dredging the Taieri and Waipori Rivers wrs held on the 18th inafc. at Mr J. R. Scott's office, Stock Exchange. There were present Messrs O. Samson (Taieri County), A*. M'Pherson (Bruce Countj), W. Snow (West Taieri River Board), J. Stevenson (Henley Eiver Board), John H. Wilson (Otakia Diaiu»go Boi;rd), and Mr John Gvant (secretary).
Mr Stevenson was appointed to the chair, and after a conversational discussion it was resolved that a public meeting of settlers should be convened at an early date, when the following resolutions should be submitted for consideration :—
" 1. That this meeting is of opinion that the waters of the Taisri, Waibsla, toad Waipori are rapidly silting tip with tb^ sludge from the digging ia the back country."
"2. That the- time has arrived that steps should be taken to have something done to keep the waterways open, so as to prevent flooding in excess of what has been ia times past."
"3. Should a body be formed for the purposo of controlling any works that may have to be carried on, cuch body should be, say, a river trust."
' ' 4. Should a district be mapped out consisting of all the lands effected by floods, said district to be rated Stir the purpose of carrying out the works required."
•'5. To request the Government to put through a bill to give such body power to acfc, and, if possible, to get them to define the boundaries of the district."
"6. To ask the Government to provide means to carry out the work. Seeieg that it is the diggings that is causing the silting up of. these streams, we expect the Government to take immediate action."
" 7. That it would be well to push this matter on as ioon ah possible, us the House will meet on the 30th of June, aud if any bill is to go through for the working of this, it will have to be forwarded in time."
It was agreed that a public meeting to discuss the above resolutions be held iv the Henley Public Hall, Henley, at 1 o'clock p.m. on Thursday, the 9th Jane, 1898, and that it be advertised in the Otago Daily Times and T&ieri Advocate. — The Chaikman then announced the meeting as closed. — Mr Samson moved a vote of thanks to the chairman.
