Australian Championship Chess Hatch.

J. L. JACOBSEN v. W. H. JONAS. (Sydney Mail.)

The match began on the 9th inst. at the School of Arts Chess Club, and will be continued every Monday night until its' conclusion. Mr Jacobsen won the toss for the ! right of first move, and he opened on ordinary ! Giuoco Piano lines. Mr Jonas's third move cramped development, and his 6tb, 61b, 7tb, and Slh moves were all open to question. IVIr Jacobsen quietly accumulated advantages, aud at the adjournment' was a bishop and two pawns ahead. We give below the score and notes to the game; —

(a) A timid beginning', which confines the kb ; 3 b-b 4 or kt-b 8 w^c better. (6) Not gc-od, A* !hc kt will presently be a mark for attack by tin X B P.

(0) Bmegarei»g dev?l«pment. He should have played 6 kt-k b 3. (d) Oontrarj to ftll principles. (c) Contrast the xwitions. White has castled and has three pieces, ia good play against Black's one pieca and badly placed queen. (0 Mr Jacobsen usually likes the queens on the bofc.id. Ha now wins a pawn.

(q) 12 kt-kt 3 would lows a piece-c g., IS kt-kl 3 ; 13 t-B 8, kt-k 4 ; 14 P-K K3, Ac. (/i) With a P to the good aad a much better developed game, winning for White is now a question of time. (£) Gaining another P. (j) A pietty move. If 26 r x r ; 27 P x B, kt-kfc 3 ; 28 P-K 5, followed by E. checks, wins. (7c) This clearly loeea a piece, but it mattered little what he did.

[It is clear the game is lost to Black. If 32 kxr 3i; B.x E , and the kt has only r1 to go to. Any other move is equally bad. Mr Jonas moat have been hypnotised to adopt such an outre defence. He might hove got the Husgarian Defence by 4 fe-k 2, but he doe.* everything possible to play White's game.-CH. Ed. O.W.]
