THE WELINGTON SOCIETY,
Wbluno'ion, Maj' 20,
At a meeting of the Aecl;niati ation Society one member who had studied the subject declared that, the domestic cat is more destructive to game tliaa all the bswks, weasels, stoats, &c, in the colony. Most- of the bush coverts, he said, ate full of those civfcs, a fact which he himself proved near Feilding with the assistance of traps, baited with smoked fish. Another member took a stand in tho detcoce of hawks, on the ground th«t lb>y were friends rat her than the eaeisie? of gairr-/ His explanation of this was that Ne^r Zealand hawks for the mosS part were do'; ha"vks proper, but kibep, and preferred to feed or* carrion and rats rather than on ga?se. Rats were ojott deslrucrive to game, sucking the" eggs and killing the young birds, and as hawks killed the r*ts in preference to game it was a case of a choice of the lesser of two evils. Ha thought the society _waa doiog r, wrong thing in pajlng for bhs killing of hawks.
