HTE GAELIC SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of this society was. held on the 3rd in the Stuart street Hall. Mr D Munro occupied the chair, and there was a largt attendance. The Chairman, in his opening re marks, mentioned that invitations to the annual gatherings of the two Southland Gaelic Societies had been recently received, also that a new Gaelic Society was being formed in the vicinity o Palmerston. He also feelingly referred to tb< death of Mr Charles Reiii, who was one of tin founders of the Gaelic Society in Dunedin and iti first president, whose memory the members whe knew him would ever revere. He also referred tc the death of a grand "Id Highlander, Mr Alex under M'Lennan, of Waitati, who died at ths ripe age of 9S ye»rs. Dr Gordon Mac<Joaald gavt a vivid description of the City of Venice, its prin cipal buildings— St. Mark's Cathedral and the Palace of the Doges (now a picture gallery)— of its marble buildings erected on piles, its gondolas waterway?, canals, 4c, its trade and manufac tures (principally glassware). - His desciiption o the methods adopted by the inhabitants for ex trading coin from the pockets of the English anc American tourists was vevy amusing, and thi address was received with indications of marked approval. Mr J. Turner's recitation of "Th< Bonnie Braw Tartan " was also well received, anc Mr Nelson danced an Irish jig which was mucl admired. Gaelic songs were sung by Mrs Camp bell and Messrs Duncan M'Phersou, Neil Buch. anhan, and Neil Lindsay, all of which wer< heartily appreciated. Mr M'Alister (instructec by the Crown prosecutor) appeared for, the Customs department, and asked for a remand He said accaeed had been discovered working the still, and he believed he was one of a Urge gang who were carrying on distilling operstioni in and around the goldfields. M'Ammcn, at elderly man, said he was guilty of being in thi houee, but he never fixed the stilL there nor made any whisky. The man who did it had cleared iff the steamer when it reached town last night. Accused was remanded for & week.
