Otago Witness Fourth Problem Tourey—Report of the Judges.

Dunedin, 3rd November, 1897. J. Mouat, Esq., Ota go Witness. Dear Sir, — Mr Mellir and I have examined the problems submitted to us, and find that N04. 1, 5, 6, 8, and 9 are. unsound-,; the romaiuing four are of veiy poor quality. There is very little to choose between Nos. 3 and 4, but we place them : — 1. No. 4. — " Heavy and Light" 2. No 3. — " Light and Heavy." This is a disappointing competition, and we hope your next one will be more successful. We look upon it as little short of a ciime that a composer should be so careless an to send in for publication a problem which is unsound. — Yours faithfully, Robert A. Cleland. [The composer of the two prize-winning problems is Mr Ethelbert Hnlt, of 19 Bank street, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, England. We present our congratulations on his success.]
