TAIERI RACES. Tuesday— Noyjsmbbr 9.

The Spring meeting of the Taieri Amateur Turf Club was held on the Moagiel P«rk racecourse on Tuesday. .About 2000 person* w«ra present, the bulk of thajb number going out, by train from Duncdio. Fairly good weather pre» vailed, one or two showers, however, being experienced during the afternoon. Th-re were altogether eight events, and in fire of the r*ce« the favourites maaaged to get home. J*ne Eyre, who recently met with an accident, was scratched for the chief event of the day — the Taieri Gup, and also for the Fiyiog Handicap. The stakes in the former r«ce were ltnded by Hippomenes, who beat four other competitors. The meeting was caiefly remarkable for what was generally considered an extraordinary decision given by the stewards in the case of a protest lodged by Mr T. Thompson, the owner of M*yd»wn, in the Stewards' Forse Welter Handicap. Victim c&me in first in this raoe, but Mr Thompeou object* d*t-o bi& b'jicg dcelared the wisoef on the, ground that he ran inside of a'poit. F»ur out of five jonkeys in the raae wt*te«l that Victim did go inside the post, aiid-P. Murphy who rode Bentley, said his horse ba raped up i ag»iiißt Vicim, and thus cau*ed him to go inv «ide. Jenuiuge, the ridwr of Victioi, however, declared that what the other wituooe aaid was untrue, and although the stewards had no other evidence before them they deeidml, by four votes to three, to dmrin the protest. When, (he result *f tke 4e-ci-iion was uin<2e known ,Mr Tbompsou withdrew a protest which ho bad lodged , against Silverstream getting second money in the same race on the groucd of inconsistent running. The pleasure of the meeting was greatly marred by a serious accid«nt happening in the first race. When feue hones were coming berne down the straight Wimbkden ran in amongst the crowd on the left hand side of the course, and knocked down several per eons. Only two, however, were injured. On« of the two — viz., Mr Michael Butler, of South Dunedin — had seme of his ribs broken and was badly injured about the bead. It is also surmised ihitt he sustained internal injuries. Immediately after the aocident he was conveyed^, to Mrs O'Kane's Hfltel af Mocgiel where he was attended by De T. Burns. It was subsequently reported on the etwee that -Butler had di«d about an hour after his removal to the hotel, bat later ou » contradiction of this report wss received in town by telephone. The oliber man who was hurl had ope of bis logs rather badly bruised, but was not otherwise injured. No very large dividends were paid at the meeting, the largest being £8 in the Trial Stakes.
