COLLISION AT NEWCASTLE

9 ' TWO STEAMERS DAMAGED. Sydney, January 5. A serious collision took place in Newcastle Harbour between the steamers Dovedale, of 2821 tons, and the Indianapolis, of 2226 tons, both under charter to the Adelaide Shipping Company. The Dovedale was entering a berth, and struck the Indianapolis, lying at the dyke loading cattle, with tremendous force, and stove in a number of plates abreast the forward hatch. The Dovedale's stem was bent and eight plates damaged. In swinging round after the impact, the Dovedale struck the wharf with her stern, smashing the propeller blade, bursting the pipes supplying the hydraulic cranes, and stopping loading operations of the whole of the cranes for several hours. The Indianapolis discharged her cattle and left for Sydney to dock. The damage to the vessels, wharf, and oranes is estimated at several thousand pounds.

Intoxicating liquors have been made from the sap of the birch, the willow, the poplar, and the sscamoro.
