CRIMINAL STATISTICS.

During the quarter ended 31st December, 1696, 436 )i • '■ sin the Dunedin district were summoned. relymded, or taken into custody. Of this nup-iKi- 346 were males and 90 females. Forty-six persons who were apprehended were discharged, and informations against 34 persons were dismissed. Five* males and one female were committed for trial; 254 males and 68 females were summarily convicted ; and 19 males and eight females were otherwiio dealt with. Some 131 persons were summoned for drunkenness, 88 of tbe number being males and 43 females. Three males and one female were brought before the court for disorderly behaviour whilst drunk ; and seven males and three females for ueing obscene language. Seventeen persons were charged with breach of the peace, 16 of the number being males. Three of the charges were dismissed, and 14 were summarily dealt with. There were nine cases of wilful damage to property, four assaults on constables, nine oases of common assault, 4 males and 12 females charged • with vagrancy, and 20 males and * 3 females summoned for theft. Only two cases of cruelty to animals csme before the court duriug the quarter. E'even persons were summoned for falsa pretences, seven of the number being summarily dealt with. There was one case of wife desertion, one of indcoenfc assault, and one of threatening behaviour. One person who was charged with receiving stolen property was discharged, one was committed for trial on a charge of shooting with intent to do bodily harm, and one was similiarly dealt with on a charge of stealing from a dwelling.
