January 11. — The town is being supplied with ! water iroiu the river by a boy with a water-barrel at Is per barrel. It is a crying shame that we are uqt better supplied than this. Yet we have such wise councillors ! Death -Mr Jacob Brown passed away on Sunday evening after a long and painful illness. Deceased wai greatly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. New Patent.— Mr Henry Symes has gone to Dunedin with his new bicycle patents. I hear that they have both been passed by the Patent Office, and that a company has been formed to patent the inventions throughout the world. Mr Symes refused £5000 for his patent. Mining. — A large number of men are cutting a new head Tace for the Golden Bsach Hydraulic 0 >mpany from the top of the Old Man Range. 'Water is very scarce, and nearly all tha claims huve tboppe'd working. Coal -Mr G*rd's coal pit' has been flooded out, and there will be no more coal from this quarter till the new shaft has been sunk. The pump refuaed to work. This i 3 a grnat pity, as the coal is the best household coal in the district. ■ I
