January 11.— Farmers as a rule are considered to be chronic grumblers, but thia season at least they have in this district every cause for complaint, for what with a dry spring and a still drier summer there is not a blade of green feed visible. Even the orons that were dul 1b never had a

Ths! prospect for the j coming winter is one of the dreariest that ever a - settler in these parts has had to face, and should 1 the winter be any w»y B,cvere the mortality , amongst stock will be terrible. Educational.— The school reopens on Mbndaj r , 18th inßt., after being closed for a month's holi- [ day. The local committee gave their vote in i favour of M"r. P. B. Fraser, of Dun back. The ■ i annual school picntc is to be held on Friday 22, to i j which all and sundry are cordially invited.
