RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

V.A.T.C. MEETING. (Peb Press Association.)

Melbourne, October 18

The Caulfield meeting, which was postponed from Saturday, began to-day. Though rather cloudy and threatening about noon, it turned out a beautiful day, and there was an excellent attendance, including Lord Hopetoun. Speculation was very brisk. The running in the Guineas completely upsets Pulvil's chance for the Derby, whilst enhancing The Sailor Prince's. The following are the results j —

Entering the straight Brockleigh made a tremendous run, and at half the distance he was on level berms with Porb Admiral, and forging ahead won by a length, bwo lengths dividing second and'third ; Portsea, Division, Jeweller, and Camoola following in a bunch. A middlii g start was effected, Delaware getting away v.ith a lead, though quickly passed by Pulvil ard Aquarius. Ab the sixfurlong post The Sailor Prince was tenth, and Patron absolutely last, but approaching the straight the latter came up very fast, and loc ked an easy winner. Halfway up the straight The Sailor Prirce came at him like a bulldog, but failed quite to get up, and a terrific finish ended in his defeab by a neck ; Pounamu a length and a-half away. Then came Pulvil, Delaware, and Aquarius in the order named.

Pounamu ran a wonderfully good colt considering his comparative greenness. Time, lmin 46|sec. The rider of Patron complains of being twice interfered with during the race. .-,-„_ STEPPIiECIIVSE, Or 2oosovs ; second GOsovs. About two miles. "Hone Pcene," of the Witness, says :— " WntiDg nine days prior to the e^eot, I cannot for the life of me pin my faith to one particular animal for the Caulfield Cup. I can reduce it to half a dozen right enough— that's to my own satisfaction— and then I fancy two or three of them should run a dead heab for it, these being Oxide, Sunshink, Wild Rose, Newton.
