Auckland, October 17.
A horse that is reported to be going well at Ellerslie is St. KUda. I expect to see this fellow win one of the open races at the Pakurangi Hunt Club meeting.
The Woikman and the two year-old filly ( 'luopairn, (by Npls.ou— Memphis) wete shipped to Ohristcliuich on Thursday List. The first-named has done a lot of lonpt-rlManr-e work, but personally I do not fancy hi.-, Key/ Zealand Gup chance. However, he should pick up a race oi two over distances ranging from fix furlongs to one mile aud :i It ilf. Cleopatra has done plenty of sinuUii) 1 , wo) le, but the hal/ilucb at ICllenliu think that Anuiversaiy is a better filly than Cleopatra.
Since last Wednesday three highly-bred foals have made their appearance at Wellington Park. Sapphire (by The Drummer— Amethyst) has pro-
duced a filly to the Nordenfeldt horse Medallion : Rubina (by Kingsborough— Etiquette) a colt foal to Tasman, and therefore full brother to Launceston; and Katipo (by Tregeagle — Pungawerewere) a colt to Cuirassier. The well-known jumping mare Good Day has produced a filly by Cap-a-pie. The Auckland Coursing Club announce the conditions of the Great Northern Challenge Stakes to be run next June. It is anticipated that the stake will be worth £100 to the winner. Messrs Alison Bros have had splendid luck with their brood mares this season, live of the number having produced cplts. During: the present week Va^ator (by Ciptivator— Vacillation) produced a colt foal by Castor, and Pearl (by Barbarian) a colt foal by Paddy's Land. Longroper must be hard to beat in the Pakurangi Club Cup on Saturday next, and no doubt he will be a strong order. His most dangerous opponent I take to be Jim, who is pretty well. I hear that George Absalom has Ida in good nick, and that she is going well in her work. John Kean has joined the stable, and there are few better horsemen. There is a good deal of regret among owners at the Takapuna Jockey Club not holding a Spring meeting this year. Mr D. M'Kinnou's string of horses, consisting ot four three-year-olds and two-year olds, were brought down from the Waikato on Wednesday. They are located at Mr R. Blaikie's stables at Greenlane. Williamson's two-year-olds have been given plenty of strong spurting work at Ellerslie of late The general impression is that Lord Dunluce (by St. Leger— Lady Antrim) is the best of the batch. Vieux Rose has paid a ri^it to Cuirassier. James Kean has had two additions made to his string this week in the shape of Otakeho and Cleveland. Both are jumpers, and come from Ilaweia. W. Laiug accompanied the pair.
Later. St. Hippo is still working, and good judges opine that there is not much wrong with him.
