NOTES BY SLIP.

The Otago team of cricketers left Dunedin for the North on Saturday morning. Downes was unable to obtain leave, and it was found impossible to secure the services of another bowler to take his place, so that 11 men only went away and the team will have to rely on the bowling of the Carisbrook members, with Parker for a change. It is hoped that MacNeil will be able to join the team at Wellington and take part in the two last matches of the tour.

It would appear that there is some likelihood of a visit being paid to the colony early next year by a Tasmanian team, for I notice that the committee of the Southland Cricket Association have been asked for terms for a match in February with a team from the South Tasmanian Association. The Southland Association agreed to offer 80 per cent of the 1 proceeds of a match. W. Vint, who was at one time a member of the Melbourne club, was included in a team of Irish cricketers which played a series of matches in America in the month of October. His wicket-keeping impressed the Americans most of all, and the press were of the opinion that he was the best that any Irish team had taken to America. He also figured well in the batting averages, coming out, second with an average of 20.3.

The cable informs us that Lohmann, the well-known professional cricketer, has been ordered to pass the winter in Australia or at the Cape Frcm this it would appear that the famous Surrey player (of whom, by the^vay, an admirable portrait is issued as a supplement to the last number of Cricket, which has reached the colonies) is suffering from some pulmonary complaint. The wish will be general in the colonies as well as at Home that Lohman's illness may be speedily overcome. During the last season in England, I may mention, Lohmann was not nearly so successful as in the previous year. For his county his batting average was 15.5. as against 26.7 in 1891, but with the ball he did well, taking 102 wickets at an average cost of 13.89.

A well-known Auckland crickeber, J. Mumford, dropped dead at the Domain cricket ground on the 14th. He was playing in a scratch match of the Veteran Club, of which he was a member, and was at the wickets with^A. E. Whitaker. The two players had scored 40 runs and Whitaker, striking a ball which he thought good for a run, beckoned to Mumford, but the latter declined to go and immediately afterwards fell, and after a few gasps he expired. Dr Walker, who was on the ground, states that death was caused by heart apoplexy. Mumford, who was 50 years of age, has been one of Auckland's prominent cricketers for a long period. He was a member of the Choral Society, Orchestral Union, and Amateur Opera Club.

The Auckland Cricket Association has selected the following team to represent Auckland in the match with Otago : — J. Fowke, W. Gardner, J. T. Harkness, D. Meldrum, D. Miller, T. A. Moresby, R. Neill, T. Neill, W. Stemson, R. J. Yates, J. R. Lundou; emergencies — F. V. Kelly and T. H. Wilson.

CHRIST'S COLLEGE v. HIGH SCHOOL. The annual cricket match between Christh College (Christchurch) and the Otago Hig's School was played on the Carisbrook ground last Friday, but did not attract much attention. The High School got in first on a good wicket, but against the bowling of Polhill and Nalder, each of whom secured a good analysis, they batted in feeble style and were only able to put together 30 runs. This total was speedily passed by the visiting team, whose earlier batsmen found their opponents' bowling rather to their liking. Polhill proved himself to be a capable batsman as well as an efficient bowler, and ran up 34 before he was caught. Grigg and Nalder, and, later on in the innings, the two Westons and Marjoribanks, lent useful assistance, the result being that a total of 122 was realised. In a minority of 92 the School commenced their second innings, and a few smart showers of rain having the effect of making the ball greasy, much of the trundling of the College boys got off the wicket, and merited, and received, punishment. Kingston, Sale, and E. H. Williams made matters lively while they werfe at the wickets, but the majority of the others again failed to give the scorers much trouble, and the innings closed with the score standing at 78, so that the College won by an innings and 14 runs.
