"MARJORIE."

On Monday night "Marjorio,"an opera about which great things have been said, was produced on an unusual scale of magnificence, the scenery, wardrobe, and properties being a distinct advance upon even the high standard of excellence hitherto associated with the name of the Royal Comic Opera Company. " Marjorie "is entirely new to Dunedin. It was introduced to Australia at Melbourne on December 20, 1890, when it had a great run, and it has since been revived both in Melbourne and Sydney on several occasions with marked-success. The enthusiasm with which it was received by the large audience which witnessed its initial performance in Dunedin on Monday night fully justified the excellent accounts which have preceded its production here. Miss Florence Young appeared in the title rdle and gave an excellent account of herself. Miss Graupner, Miss Clara Thompson, Mr Charles Ryley, Mr George Lauri. Mr Henry Bracy, 'and Mr Howard Vernon all had good parts, and their excellent performances merited the applause they received. A distinctive and attractive feature of the production was the introduction, for the first time in Dunedin, of the corps of dancers known as the Royal Ballerinas, who have become quite famous for their cleverness' and agility in Australia, These young ladies executeed some charming and graceful ballets, notably the famous gavotte from the opera of "La Cigale," which created quite a sensation in Melbourne recently. It is announced that, in accordance with the managerial policy of quick changes and short runs, only a few performances of " Marjorie" can be given.
