LAND SALE AT INVERCARGILL.

If anyone wanted evidence of the keen demand for land, on reasonable terms, that exists in Southland he had only to visit the Land Office on Friday. The office itself (says the Southland News) was crowded, and the passage leading up to it blocked with people whose countenances told that they were thece on business, and not out of idle curiosity. Lands in the Longwood district, near the Waiau, in Paterson district, Stewart Island, and section^ in Crornartytownship, near the Wilson's river diggingd, were to be disposed of, the township sections by auction, and the others by ballot. There were also a few

suctions in other parts of Southland and some grazing leases to be put under the hammer, but these did not excite much attention. Greatest interest centred in the Waiau sections, which offered an opening for those who intend going in for farming 1 . Bore there were offered altogether 12 allotments, 10 of which were of sufficient area for farming purposes. An idea of the eagor demand for suoh land is afforded by the fact that there wdre 47 applicants for one section alone, while for six of them no less than 147 persons put in an average of nearly 25 per sdctiou, while applications that were informal would have swelled the number considerably. There Was it ■fair" demand for the Stewart Island (Half moon Bay and Horseshoe Bay) sections which were also balloted for". The sum received by the department as deposit money totalled £11OS 13s, which eclipses anything in the history of land sales for many years. Having regard to the large number of disappointed applicants, it will be the duty of the Government to open up further blocks to meet the demand. The Cromarty sections were all sold by auction, but only in one case did they bring much above the upset, the one referred to bringing nearly double. It will be seen from the table below" that the allotments were taken up under the threo systems now in force— namely, " occupation witli right of purchase," "cash," and "lease in perpetuity."
