LAKE COUNTY.

November 11.— An ordinary meeting of the County Council was held last week, but the business done presented very few features of public interest. An opinion was received from Mr Turton, solicitor to the council, respecting the demand of Messrs Boyes and Daniel, formtr members of the council, for a refund of sums surcharged by the Auditor-gene-ral, in connection with travelling expenses. Mr Turton's advice was against a return of the amounts. But Mr Boyes produced a letter from Mr Batkin, Auditor-general, to the effect that according, to the decision of Judge Williams in the case against the Maniototo Council, he (Mr Batkin) was in error ia making the surcharge, and that the council can legally pay back the money without any objection being raised by the audit department. The amount of the claim of Messrs Boyea and Daniel is about £20, and it was unanimously resolved to pay it. The sum of £200 was voted towards making a road to the dredging claims above Morven Ferry, on the Kawarau, aud it is expected that the Government will subsidise the amount to the extent of pouud for pound. Tenders are already called for the work, so that it will be begun without much lots of time.

Catholic Church.— One of the largest congregations seen iv Arrowtown for many years, assembled in St. Patrick's Church yesterday. The Most llev. Dr Moran, Bishop of Dunedin, performed the ceremony of blessing the church, and Monsiguore Coleman celebrated High Mass coram pontifici. The Eev. Father Burke, of Port Chalmers, preached an e'.oqueut and impressive sermon. Mayoral. -Dr Donaldson was re-elected mayor of Arrowtowu last week, without opposition again. The County Council and tho borough of Arrowtown voted last week for the re-election of Mr George Heller as the representative on the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Just So.— At a meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council on Tuesday the mayor expressed regret that Government had again refused to grant telephonic communication between Queenstown and Glenorchy, for it was a great injustice to the people at the Head of the Lake. He thought, however, that if the member for the district were made fully acquainted with the circumstances of the case ho would perhaps see the necessity of the matter, and urge the department to grant the request. In the course of hi 9 remarks Mr St. Omer said that wheu the Jive was asked for, a few years ago, it waa refused on the ground that it would cost about £1200. Now, it wa3 said, it could not be made for less than £1800. Mr St. Omcr said he could not understand this. No wonder 1

Iv granting the furlough both mayor and councillors spoke highly of the way in which Mr Donne had carried out his many duties since he has been in the service of the ratepayers. Cricket. — The knights of the willow in Arrow and Queenstown started the season not long since with a scratch match, each on their respective grounds. All arrangements* are now nearly completed for carrying on regular practice. No doubt the customary district match will take place before long. For the " Big Show."— Mr Hofcop, the energetic secretary to the local committee, had his hands pretty full fora few days last week, getting together the multifarious things intended for the exhibition. Amongst the many interesting articles are said to be some beautiful samplea of needlework done by two ladies in Arrowtown. Mr Elliott, manager of the Premier mine, Macetown, sent half a ton of quartz fit tho beginning of last week. This is the second instalment sent by the Premier Company, and it was shovelled into tho bags promiscuously from tbe paddock.
