BOAT ACCIDENT AT PORT MOLYNEUX.
. LOSS OF TWO LIVES. Balclutha, November 12. A boat accident occurred at Wiltshire Bay shortly after noon on Monday, by which two men, John Carrick and John Harland, were drowned, while Alexander Anderson, a storekeeper at Romahapa, had %n almost miraculous escape. The three left Nugget Bay in a boat at 6 o'clock that morning, and went out fishing. The morning was very calm, but shortly afterwards a fresh breeze sprang up and they could not land for the breakers. When outside oi Campbell's Beef the boat overturned twice, bui; all the three held on to it. It overturned a third time, and Carrick and Harland were washed away and drowned. Anderson caught hold of the boat, which again righted, and gradually drifted towards the heavy breakers, rocks, aud fields of seaweed. The struggle continued for an hour, the boat being frequently overturned, submerged, entangled amongst seaweed, &c. Ultimately the boat was dashed against a rock, which Anderson caught. He got on to the rock, and a young man named Charles Arthur swam out to him with a rope, and he was rescued, The exciting scene was witnessed by a large crowd of holiday-makers. (sheep farmer), and Robertson (his shepherd) were committed for trial, the latter for shooting horses belonging to the Natives on Knight's run, and the former for being accessory before the fact by instructing Robertson to shoot the horses. Bail was allowed, each in £70, and two sureties of £100 each.
