RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. HUNT CLUB MEETING.

Fibst Day. — Friday. President— Hou G. M'Lean. Vice president— Mr J. Stephenson. Sfcew rus— Mr F. W. Petre, M.H., Mr K. Wilson, Mr W. H Taggart, Mr J. Davidson, Mr J Plemiuff, Mr W. L. Philn, Mr Jas. Mills, Mr H. Gourley, Mr L Maclca , Mr M. Kagan, Mr J Hazlett. Judge— Mr H. Driver. Starter— Mr T. H. Dodson. Olerk of the Course— Mr B. H.Hart. Treasurer— Mr I*". Meonan. Clerk ot the ScalesMr S. G. Smith. Timekeeper— Mr V. Hyams. Handicapper —Mr Geo Dowse. Secretary —Mr Sydney James. The first day of the Annual Hunt Club Steeplechases at Forbury Park was signalised by splendid weather. The morning was in fact a glimpse of summer, and the heavy rain that fell later on did not commence until everyone had had ample time to get comfortably back to town. The attendance was not very large, but some good sport was witnessed," and none of the spills that occurred in the jumping races resulted in any injury to the riders The Northern horses, who were well represented, succeeded in taking a good share of the stakes, but there was little outside speculation. £1514 passed through thft two totalisator machines that were at work. Appended are the details of the racing: — MAIDEN HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, Of -tOsovs ; second horsa saovs from ihe stakes, Weight tor age. Amateur riders allowed 71b. About two miles. Mr W H Tag^arfc us b g Wildboy, syrs, list lib (Mr H Guurley) 1 Mr R M'Master'e br g Fishhook, aged, 12st 3lb (G Robertton) 2 Mr J O'Donuell's b g Mayboy, aged, 116b 101b" (Mr Anderson) 3 Messrs Myers Brothers' b g Cocky, aged, 12st 31b (Mervyn) 0 Mr H Diamond's bg Olaiendou, aged, 12st Mb (Mr Clark) 0 Mr G Shaw's eh g Pastime, aj;ed, 12st 31b (Dunn) o Mr J Poole's b g BothwelJ, aged, 12sfc 3!b (Poole) 0 Mr W H Taggart's b m Spinksrina, need, list 101b (Mr W J Taggart) 0 Mr G Smith's b g Rorquhal. Gyrs, list 101b (Mr G Smith) 0 Betting .- 2to 1 against Pastime ;3to 1 Fishhook ; 5 to 1 any other. Bagshot and Peter Flat were scratched. Roi quhal was quickest away, but soon yielded the lead to Spinkcrina, the rest following in a cluster with Cocky nearest. Spinkerina foil at the back of the course, leaving Wildboy in a strong lead, and her rider, although wonderfully quick in remounting, had to follow on in the rack. The field was a straggling one by this time, and Wildboy finished the first mile some half-dozen lengths in front of Fishhook, with Pastime some distance behind, and Rorquhal, Cocky, aed Mayboy next. All got safely over the stand jumps, but Mr Clark on Clamidon lost a stirrup, and when nearing the next timber he quietly rolled off. The race was now plainly between Wildboy and Fishhook, bar accidents, as they were a long way in the van, and rounding the home turn it looked a very likely thing for Fishhook. Wildboy, however, was not quite dove, and getting over the last jump without a mistake he showed a good deal the better pace on the flat and drew away, winning by five or bix lengths. Mayboy was a bad third and Pastime, Cocky, Both well, and Rorquhal next in the order named, long gaps separating them. Time, 4min4l-|sec. £84 was invested in the inside totalisator. Dividend, £7 11s. Outside there was no investment. KENSINGTON HANDICAP FLAT RACE, Of 75sovs ; sßcond hur-e lOsovs, third horse ssovs Irom the stakes. One mile and a-quarfcer. Mr H D Bradley's b m Athol Daisy, aged, Bst (Stratford) 1 Hon. G M'Lean's b c St. Ives, 3yrs, 6st 91b (Coehrane) 2 Mr J Stephenson's b m Miss Cook, 4yrs, 7st (Dyer) 3 Mr It Blackham's b h Puck, oyrs, 7st 31b (Buddicombe) 0 Betting : 3to 2 agst Miss Cook, 2 to 1 Athol Daisy. First Lord, Apropos, aud La Rose were ecratchecl.

After one break away on the part of St. Ives they were mnt off with the Zetland spots in frout, Athol Daisy next, Miss Cook third, and Puck whipping in. They passed the stand in this order, but at the corner Stratford on Athol Daisy ranged up in inside running, and by the time the bend was rounded he had secured the lead. Miss Cook, who had been pulling hard, was also let out a bit and lay alongside St. Ives, but fell away again before the mile had been covered. Sb. Ives was under the whip at the homo turn, and Miss Cook also finished nuder punishment, but Bho could never get near the leader. St. Ives stuck to his work resolutely all tho way home, but Athol Daisy was holding him off easily enough and won by three-quarters of a length, which could have been considerably increased. Time, 2miu 22|sec. There was £387 in the totalisators. Dividends: Inside, £2 7s 6d; outside, £2 Bs. SELLING FLAT RACE, Of3osnvß. One mile. Mr J. Pilbrow's b g Bagshot, aged, Bst (Derritt) 1 Mr G. Dent's eh m Kino, aged, 7st 121b (carried Sst) ... . ... ... ... (Boyle) 0 Mr A. Smith's br m Iris, syrs, 6st 12tb (Smith) 0 Betting : 6to 4 agst Bagshot, 2to 1 Mokoia. Foul Play, College Boy, and Lady Ellen were scratched. The start was a good one, and Mokoia, Bagshot, and Kino at once went to the fore, Iris next, and Beeswing bringing up the rear. This order continued until the three-quarter mile pobt was reached, when Kino retired into fourth place and Iris improved her position. At half a mile Mokoia .still had command, and looked all over a winner as he appeared to be pretty hard held. He was still leading at the bottom of the course, when Derritt shook up Bagshot and easily passed him. From this point Mokoia was never in it, collapsing entirely when challenged, and Beeswing coming up from the rear, fought out the finish with the Canterbury horse. He got to his quarters on the post bub uo more, and Sweetbriar finished four or five lengths behind. Iris was fourth, Kiuo fifth, and Mokoia last. Time, 53,isec. £287 was invested iv the totalisators. Dividends — Inside, £1 19s ; outside, £1 17s. TALLY-HO HAKDIUAP STEKPLECHASK, Of ISOsovs ; second horse 20sovs, third horse lOsovs trom the stakes. Amateur riders allowed 7lb. About three miles. Mr R. Rutherford's b g Fangh-a-ballaeh, aged, lUt4lb ... ... ... (Lytord) 1 Mr H. Luun's cb g Canard, aged, last 101b (Limn) 2 Mr W. Weston's br g Aroha, aged. lOst 10lb (less 71b allowance) ... (Mr Murray-Aynsley) 8 Mr W. W. Greener's chg Trapper, aged, lOst 101b (J. Cotton) 0 Mr J. Stephenson's b g Peter Flat, 0 yrs, 9st (T. Cotton) 0 Betting : 6to 4 agsfc Canard, 2to 1 Faugh-a-ballagh, 4 to 1 any other. Victor and Bagshot were scratched. Peter Flat went to the front at the fall of the flag, attended by Faugh-a-batlagh and Aroha, and the first mile was covered by the leaders iv this order, with Canard fourth. The jumping was clean so far, and on approaching the sod wall in front of the new stand Peter Flat still held a slight lead from Faugh-a-ballagh. Here, however, he struck heavily, and was only provented coming to great grief by an excellent piece of horsemanship on the part of Cotton. The latter, though nearly out of the saddle, pulled bis horse together and went on in third place. The log fences in front of the stand were taken in fine style by the leaders—Faugh-a-ballagh and Aroha — and on entering the second mile the mauve jacket showed in front. But Faugh-a-ballagh kept well to his work, and at two miles the pair wore side by side and travelling at a great pace. The partnership was dissolved by Aroha falling badly at the first of the log fences, and although Mr Aynsley was quickly in the saddle again and went the course pluckily his chance was gone. Canard then pelted away in second place and looked to be able to settle matters easily enough during the last mile. Meanwhile Peter Flat had run round the sod wall that had troubled him in the first mile, and his example had been followed by Trapper, who was travelling helplessly in the rear all through. The race, after tho two miles, was left entirely to Faugh-a-ballagh and Canard, and the latter, although he closed up considerably three-quar-ters of a mile from home, fell back again, and as Faugh-a-ballagh got safely over the final jump, he was able to pass the post a comfortable half-dozen lengths ahead. Aroha came in third, a long way behind, the others nowhere. Time, 6min 46.Jsec. There was £346 in the totalisators. Dividends — Inside, £4 18s; outside, £4 4s. SHORTS HANDICAP FLAT RACE, Of 5050v6 : second horse, ssovs from the stakes. The winner ot the K<m-ingfcoa Handicap to carry 101b extra. Six furlongs. Mr H Goodman's eh f Apropos, ;f yrs, 7s(. First Lord and Miss Cook were scratched. After a good deal of trouble, the flag was lowered to an unsuccessful start, Apropos jumping away with half-a-dozen lengths advantage, and Gaiety being left altogether. Temuka led the chase after Apropos, with Molly Bawn next, and after a quarter of a mile had gone La Rose worked up into second position, displacing Temuka, who fell away beaten. They turned into the straight, Apropos still holding a strong lead, and Athol Daisy being driven along hard on the outside. Both she and La Rose were brought up the straight under the whip and got within a length of the chestnut filly, but Sharp was sitting down on her, and won pretty well as he liked by about a length. Athol Daisy got her nose in front of La Rose on the post, and given a better start, would have caused trouble. Molly Bawn finished fourth, Temuka fifth, Riccarton sixth, and Gaiety last. Time, lmin 22sec. There was £407 in the totalisatovs. Dividends— lnside, £2 14s 6d ; outside, £2 2s. H4CKRACE, Of lOsovs ; no weight under Bst. Six f ur!ongß. (Sharp) 2 These were the only starters, and there was little or no speculation on the event. Stepper led round the course, and Derritt lying at his girths made no attempt to pass him until nearly home. He cut matters very fine indeed, ouly winning cltJverly on the post by a short noso. The only totalisator investments were £1 on the

inside machine and £2 on the outside one, both on Bagshot, and the money was returned to the lucky speculators, less 10 per cent. Baghhot was bought in by Mr Pilbrow after the race at £25. Second Day.—- Saturday. The second day of the Hunt Club meeting at Forbury Park drew a slightly improved attendance, and some really excellent sport was witnessed. The Hunt Club Cup provided a finely riddeu out finish between Wildboy and Victor ; and it was noteworthy that not a single spill occurred during the race. The victory of Puck in the Telegraph Handicap was au almost un* exampled surprise, and resulted in one of the largest dividends that have been paid for a long time. After the event there were plenty to recall the good running of the same hortse in the Kensington Handicap the day before, and to wonder that he should not have found more i support ; but the apparently bad condition of the animal was sufficient explanation. The decision of the stewards with regard to Ben H., who ran right back in the Cup and won the Consolation easily, was come to after the fullest obtainable evidence had been taken. It was reported by the owner that the horse was one that needed "sending," and that he was ridden in the first race by a gentleman rider who, perhaps, had indifferent nerve, and in the second by a professional jockey. Mr Jefferson, who rode him in the Cup, stated that he was riding a waiting race, but allowed the field to get too far away from him and had no chance of recovering his ground. The protest was therefore dismissed. Speculation was somewhat brisker than on Friday, and £2639 passed through the totalisators making a total of £4153 for the two days. Appended are the detailed results : — HANDICAP HURBLB RACE, Of 50sovs; second horse lOaovs from the stakes. About one mile and a-half. Mr It. Faugh a-ballagh jumped away with the lead, but Foul Play immediately gave him the go-by, and cleared the first hurdle well in front, with Trapper third. Andy, however, drew up into third place before the straight was reached, which Foul Play entered with a strong lead. As they went by the stand Aroha had passed on and was running second with Faugh-a-ballagh third, Trapper, Andy, and Temuka in the order named. At three-quarters of a mile Faugh-a-ballagh was sent along a bit, and overhauling Aroha along the back stretch passed into second place. A quarter of a mile from home Aroha fell back into fourth place and was never seen in the race afterwards, while Faugh-a-ballagh drew steadily upon Foul Play and approached the last jump almost at his girths. Lyford driving him along pretty smartly, the pair cleared the lmrdle together and in the run home Faugh* a-ballagh forged ahead easily and passed the post three lengths to the good. Temuka was an indifferent third, and Trapper fourth. Aroha,. who was regularly beaten, fell at the last hurdle; The time was 3min Bsec. The totalisator dividends were — Inside, £3 Is outside, £2 15s 6d. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP FLAT RACE, Of 70sova ; eecond horse lOsovs from the stakes. ! One mile and a distance. Mr E. (Coehrane) o Betting : Bto 2 against Apropos, 2to 1 Athol , Daisy, 4 to 1 Miss Cook, 10 to 1 Puck. Mr Dodson let the flag down to a splendid start, and for the first quarter of a mile the field ran in a regular cluster. Miss Cook showed a [ shade in front the first few strides, but in pasI sing the stand Puck was in the van with Apropos and Athol Daisy in close attendance, both pulling strong. Molly Bawn was also at their girths, and the others lying very handy, Mokoia last. From this point Puck gradually drew farther away, aud along the back of the course he held a lead of several lengths, with Apropos second, and Athol Daisy heading the others in a stern chase. At the bottom of the course it was tolerably plain that Puck would not go back to the field, j and that the oDly one who had a chance of catching him was Apropos. Thcoutsidtr, however, was not to be denied, and held his own gamely all the way home, passing the post untouched four or five lengths to the good. Molly Bawn was a bad third, a long way behind Apropos ; Athol Daisy was fourth side by side with her, aud Miss Cook next. Time, 2min 10|seo. The totalisators, of course, paid heavy dividends over Puck, who was a great surprise. The dividends were — Inside, £15 17s ; and outside (where there were only two investors), £40 19s. This was the grandest race of the day. They were dismissed to a very straggling start, Victor being first off by a good four or five lengths, Wildboy and Mayboy following in open order, Ben H. and Aroha right away behind. The leading files pelted away in hot pursuit of Victor, and over the first jump Wildboy led slightly, with Fishhook second, Mayboy third, and Victor, who had been eased a bit, fourth. In the straight Fishhook forged up, and took command of affairs passing the stand. The order here was— Fishhook, Wildboy, Mayboy, Victor, Leap Year, Ben 11. and Aroha, a gap of from three to six lengths separating eaoh. All cleared the double timber in front of the stand In fine style, and also the log fence at the northern bend of the course. After thin, Wildboy and Mayboy began to close up on Fish*

hook, and they travelled the back stretch in a j bluster. Mayboy was the first to emerge from the cluster, and led at tho bottom turn, with Wildboy second ; aud Fishhook falling away, Victor came along fast up the straight and deprived him of third place. The stand jumps were taken for the becond time by Mayboy, Wildboy, Victor, and Fishhook in that order, and the grey especially flew the timber grandly and gained a good bit, pa>sing into second place after the jumps. Wildboy went on again in chase iv the last mile and repassed Victor at the back of the course, aud both closed again on Mayboy. The trio ran a ding-dong race then until a-quarter of a mile from home, when Mayboy showed signals of distress, and Victor and Wildboy were left to fight it out. They were neck-and-neck on rounding into the straight, but WiUiboy drew out again, was a shade first over the last jump, and won a grandly riddenout race by two and a-half lengths. Mayboy was pretty close up, and Fishhook was fourth, pulled up. Time smin 57gsec. The totalisator dividends on Wildboy were: Inside, £5 16s ; outside, £6 14s Gd. He was unable, however, to get on terms with the mare, who won untouched by half a length with something in hand. Time, lmin 42jsec. The totalisators paid—inside, £1 123 ; outside, £1 10s 6d. King Arthur was never caught. At three-quarters of a mile Wildboy challenged Finance for third place but fell off again, and half a mile from home Bagshot, who had been nursed so far, was let out in pursuit of the favourite. He drew upon him at the home turn, but the struggle was very short in the straight, as King Arthur beat him off without any difficulty and won as he liked by 4 half a dozeii lengths.
