(FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Timaru, December 16. The Timaru Racing Club's meeting to-day-was well attended. The following are the results : — HURDLE RACE, Of 40 soys. Two miles. Over eight nights of hurdles. Mr P Jones' Coryphee, 6 yrs, Sst 101b (Wallace) 1 Mr Wilkinson's Panic, 9st 4lb, 81b over (Cotton) 2 Mr Mahouy's Unit, aged, Bst 101b ... (Dunn) 3 Messrs M nnd 0 Hobbs' Moody, aged. 12st 31b (B Nicholson) 0 Each horse had a good many followers, the fact that some of our best cross country riders had the mounts having a tendency to split up the field. The start was made at the back of the course, ard Mr Gardner soon sent them on their journey. Unit took the lead, but was immediately passed by Coryphee, who, at the corner, had a big lead. At the first hurdle Moody made a mistake and was never afterwards in the race. Passing the stand the first time Coryphee had a lead of some lengths, and was making the running at a tremendous pace. Panic came next, and Unit followed, some lengths away. The race from this out was unchanged, -Coryphee winning easily by three lengths. Cotton made a desperate effort to catch the game little chestnut in the straight, but the overweight told heavily. There was £187 in the totalisator, £48 being on the winner. Dividend, £3 10s. NOVEL RACE, Of 25 soys. Mr R. Hunt's .Tackall ... ... (Blackmore) 1 Messrs M. and C. Hobbs' Hinerna (H. Ogden) 2 Mr Brosnahan's Nelly, 5 yrs (.1. K. Griffin) 3 Mr* Hobbs' Miss Fenwick' (Butterworth) 0 Mr Collins' b f Rbse ... ... (Brosnahan) 0 After three or four false starts, caused by Nelly, who refused to join her horses, and after Hinerua had a short spin by herself, the lot were got away prettily. Hiuerua, Jackall, and Nelly went away grandly together, and soon left Rose and Miss Fenwick far behind. The race from the turn lay between the first three horses named. Hinerua stuck to her work gamely to the rails, where Blackmore calling on Jackall challenged her, and the pair then extended themselves in a game style. The mare, however, had to go clown before the gelding, who won by a bare length. Nellie tried hard for second honours, but was beaten by a short hoad. Time, Imin. 2|sec. Totalisator, £191 ; £25 on the winner. Dividend £6 17s. ANNIVERSARY CUP, Of 100 soys ; second horse 20 soys, and third horse 10 soys from the stakes. One and a-quarter mile. Mr Studholme's Viking, 4 yrs, by Kauri — Flying Fish, Sst 21b ... " ... (R Derritt) 1 Messrs Murphy and Stock's Scaltheen, 6 yrs, 6st 101b, 71b over ... ... (Evans) 2 Messrs M and C Hobbs' Jack, 4 yrs, Sst 61b (Mazengarb) 3 Mr M Sherwin's Mokarakara, aged, Bst 41b (Cotton) 0 Mr Moorhead's Bagshot, 6 yrs, 7st 121b (Griffin) 0 Mr F Lambert's Camerine, 3 yrs, <st 41b, 91b over (Ogden) 0 Mr Agnew's Janette, 6 yrs, 6st 71b (Cochrane) 0 The starter had a lot of trouble at the post, Scaltheen getting away twice, and when the flag fell he had a lot the worst of it. Janette cut out the running, but at the back of the course the field all closed with the exception of Camerine, who whipped in by several lengths. At the turn Viking, Jack, Scaltheen, and Mokarakara were packed close, and the race now became most exciting. The whips were out on all but Viking, but the efforts made proved unavailing, the colt winning with a bit in hand by a length and a-half from Scaltheen. Jack a good third. The race was a clinker from the fall of the flag to the post, and showed that the horses could not well have been brought better together. Time, 2min. 14jsec. Totalisator, £316 ; £144 on the winner. Dividend, £1 19s. PONY OR GALLOWAY RACE, Of 20 soys. Weight for inches. Six furlongs. Mr A M'Leod's Brown Rose, aged, list (Lewis) 1 Mr C Cornelius' Spider, 5 yrs, list (Owner) 2 Mr W Lindsay's The Old Firm, list (Mazengarb) 3 Juno, Mary Ami (pony) and Phoebe also ran. DECEMBER HURDLE RACE, ■ Of 30 soys; second horse s sovs from the stakes. Over six flights' One and a-half miles. Mr Wilkinson's Panic, 6 yrs, fist 31b ... (Cotton) 1 Mr Ashby's Boco, s yrs ... ... (Miller) 2 Mr Jones' Corj'phee, 6 yrs, 9st 101b ... (Wallis) 0 The scratching of Borderman, Milo, Silver King, and Unit left only the trio named above to try conclusions. At the hurdle opposite the stand Coryphee showed the way over, and Wallis forced her at such a pace as to actually drive her through the hurdles. Result: A general displacement of the hurdles, a severe fall for the rider, and a nasty stumble for the mare. Walls' escape from a very serious, if not fatal, accident was miraculous, as the off forefoot of Coryphee just missed the back of his head by an inch or two. After this mishap, Boco and Panic raced on ,side by side, one and the other alternately leading till the straight was reached, when Panic came away and won by a couple of lengths.Totalisator, £154 ; £46 on the winner. Dividend, £3. TIMARU HANDICAP, Of 60 soys. Second horse, 10 soys from stakes. Ono mile. Messrs Murphy and Stock's Scaltheen, 6 yrs, 7st 01b ... " ... ... ... (Derritt) 2 Messrs M and C Hobbs' Borderman,6 yra, Sat 121b (Ma/.engarb) 3 Mr 3 Hammond's Chinaman, Q yrs, 6st 71b (Cochrane) 0 Furtrader was made a favourite. N.o delay took place at the post, and Scaltheen at once took command, and was never displaced, winning amid loud cheers by several lengths. Der-

ritt^ tried hard from the fails to secure premier position, but in vain; Borderman ran o.ut a good third. Time, Jmin. 44; sec :, Totalisator, £227 ; £40 on the winner.
