THE MINES.

It is reported that Mr W. Green, of Ophir, has made a discovery of a quartz reef on the range side at the back of the town of Ophir. From what we can learn the indications are such as to lead to the belief that the reef is a true lode, the rein of the quartz being well defined, solid, and showing gold freely. Everything is 1 in favour of the assumption of a permanent reef in the locality, the country being solid, and , moreover some remarkably rich alluvial ground has been worked immediately under it on the Grange. — Dunstan Times. }Vlr T. Grose has received a telegram stating that the United Alpine's return from 205 tons of stone was 3920z amalgam, from plates only.

The following items we take from the Lake Wakatipu Mail :— The result of the crushing of .the Invincible Company's pyrites tailings by lierdan is likely to prove very satisfactory, as we 'hear that out of 11£ tons over a 100 ounces of ,gold are expected" from the amalgam to be retorted. The company have ordered six more berdans, and are making important improvements in their machinery. — We hear that Mr C. Southberg has obtained some 80 tons of .quartz from the old British- American^ claim, •and that he anticipates a good yield from it. — We hear that Mr Pearce, an old Wakatipu "miner, is now on a visit" to the district as a representative of a Victorian syndicate, and that he will probably enter into negotiations for the purchase of some quartz-mining properties at Skippers, with a view to working the same on a large scale.
